probeGT
On a recent trip out to my dad's house, I took a look at the 84 F-150 that's sitting out back. . . it had the "Explorer" package, that--if I recall correctly--was kind of a special options/striping package. He also had a 77 F-150 with Explorer package. Explorer, of course, became the SUV. I'm also aware that the Edge started out as a Ranger package. Are there any more of these current/past people can think of?
PREMiERdrum
Wasn't "Ranger" a trim of F-150, much like Explorer? Also, 500 and Galaxie were both (and together) trim designations on the Fairlane, which both became model names. In reverse, "Premier" was a '50's Lincoln name which became a Mercury trim designation. Also, "Futura" was almost the name for the Fusion, and we all know that was a trim of the Falcon range. ZX2 was the designation of the Escort in coupe form, which simply became ZX2 when the Escort name was dropped.
justinc1973
Like you stated the Explorer was a trim package as well as Edge. Ranger was a trim back in the 50's-70's (Edsel ranger, Bronco ranger, f-100 ranger) Thats all I can think of at the moment.

ehaase
LTD started as a trim level of the Galaxie 500 in 1965. Galaxie started as a trim level of the Fairlane 500 in 1959. Torino started as a trim level of the Fairlane 500 in 1968.
jonas1022
Some car models in the Ford line up back in the 50s were all on one car! Witness the Galaxie 500 on the Fairlane 500. Later Falcon Futura, which lead to the Fairmont Futura. F series trucks: Explorer was a tape and paint package for the spring in 70, 71, and 72. The Ranger was a mid level trim package that superceded the Custom Cab (Custom was also used from 54 on trucks, then cars as in Custom, Custom 300, Custom 500), and was extended upwards to the Ranger XLT, then the Ranger XLT Lariat, finally dropping the Ranger and just calling it base, custom, XL, XLT, Eddie Baur (for a couple years in the 90's) and back to the Lariat on pickups. Edge, already mentioned. Torino on the Fairlane, then became it's own model line. Courier was a two door wagon in the 50's, and then in 72 was used on the Mazda supplied pickup. Good thread already, real head scratcher! Edited December 28, 2008 by jonas1022
bravestar
Expedition was a premium package on the 2-dr Explorer.
Ovaltine
Don't forget.... the Gran Torino "Elite" became the Elite (stand alone) model: Gran Torino "Elite" Ford Elite I think back in '76, the F-100 came with a 'Ranger' trim package too. Ours did. -Ovaltine
Mark B. Morrow
It is interesting how many of the Edsel names were re-used. Ranger Citation Pacer Villager Corsair, Roundup and Bermuda never caught on.
Mark B. Morrow
Capri was a Lincoln model in the early '50s.
F250
Does this count: Mustang GT Ford GT Yea, I know they just dropped the -40 from the original GT-40.
Mark B. Morrow
Does this count: Mustang GT Ford GT Yea, I know they just dropped the -40 from the original GT-40. The first GT-40 raced in May of '64 and the GT package on the Mustang was introduced in early '65. The Mustang's GT stripe was taken from the GT-40 program. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_GT-40 Edited December 28, 2008 by Mark B. packardbob
I'm sure that LTD was a trim option for the Galaxy before it became a model of its own, then LTD Crown Vic, then just plain Crown Vic + the trim option. Mercury Grand Marquis did this too, it was just the Marquis with the Grand being applied for the super duper trim package on the Marquis. Then it became Grand Marquis LS or LX or whatever. Ron W.
Wasn't "Ranger" a trim of F-150 Yes, one of my first private party calls at a Ford dealership for special order parts the guy said I'm working on a 19?? year model Ranger and I need this that and the other thing for my Ranger. I order the parts he comes in and picks them up and comes back the next day mad at me because all of the parts are wrong. Dude had a 1/2 ton with a Ranger decal on it. syrtran
Edsel:Ranger Also non-Ford models that started off as Ford trims: Edsel: Citation Pacer Just to up the discussion ante a little: There wasn't an Edsel car with these different trims. Edsel was a separate division, and these were the individual model names, just as there was a Fairlane on the same showroom floor as a Crown Victoria. (Now we can discuss the differences between "trims" and "models." ) Does this count: Mustang GT Ford GT Yea, I know they just dropped the -40 from the original GT-40. Technically, Ford didn't officially call the original the GT-40. It was just the Ford GT - then, as now.
probeGT
Wow. . . this is fun. . . lots more to this than I thought! I will also put a shout out to the Probe, which of course started out as a series of concept cars.
RichardJensen
(Now we can discuss the differences between "trims" and "models." ) It seems kind of a hazy distinction for cars in the 50s.
twintornados
My father had a 1975 F-250 4X4 "Hi Boy" in Ginger Glow metallic that had the Ranger trim package. That was one fun truck....360 FE V8, C6 trans, NP203 full time 4WD transfer case....that thing passed everything on the road except a gas station...just like his matching Ginger Glow 1974 LTD Brougham 2DSD with a 460ci big block. Good thing my uncle owned a Gulf station at the time....
Roadrunner
Wasn't the Fusion name a concept car from Europe before it became its own model? I swear of this.
Roadrunner
I swear they should make a Taurus 500 as the premium of the premiums within that model range. It could supplant Mercury in fact. What if they just took all the Mercuries and made them high-level Fords? Different designs, like what it used to be like.
rmc523
Wasn't the Fusion name a concept car from Europe before it became its own model? I swear of this. Fusion has been/was a small (sub-compact?) car in Europe for a little while, but it's being replaced with B-Max? I think. I know it's being replaced with something, just not sure what it's named.
