range
Ford Boosts Overtime for Escape, Mariner Production Union workers at Ford's Claycomo, Mo., plant have agreed to increase their mandatory overtime work so the automaker can boost production of its popular Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner and their hybrid versions without adding another shift. They also agreed to increase overtime for the redesigned 2009 F-150 pickup truck. Employees voluntarily increased the number of Saturdays they will work from six to 21 this year. It is a major test of the new, more flexible Ford-UAW contract that allows Ford to save money to expand or contract hours without laying off or adding workers. snooter
I'm hoping this is because they aren't selling ANY vehicles to fleet... i am glad to see the union finally understand that it is either get with the program or lose your job....auto industry is only place in this country where socialism is embraced..glad to see big 3 get control of that abomination finally...on the plus plus side..small high mileage suv are finally going to sell...change is finally blowing in the wind

NickF1011
I'm hoping this is because they aren't selling ANY vehicles to fleet... Not all fleet sales are BAD. If they are rental fleet dumping them at deep discount that is one thing, but it doesn't appear that is the case. Even rental fleet sales aren't bad if you are selling a high-demand vehicle that you can ask more money for.
igor
The great thing about Escape fleets is that thanks to its reliability, frugality and Made in USA label, the Escape has become the official small SUV for local governments and other public organizations that need the capability. Sure it is not the "glamorous retail". but government fleets are still great sources of income and they do not have the same ills associated with them as daily rental fleets. ANTAUS
I'm thinking more in the case of, IF we ARE paying for overtime, it's because we are making a profit out of it, to service the demand for the higher profit sales. NOT because we are paying "more", to sell them at deep discounts. IN other words, if you have over 30% in deep discounted fleet sales, then why bother paying overtime...feed the demand of the higher profit buyers, and not erode the brand. I agree with you, but if the demand from the fleet buyers is there, you should supply them. Just make them pay a premium for the pleasure, which hopefully they are doing. Fleet sale doesn't automatically equal deep discount.

How much of a discount are they really getting? If a Stripped I4 Escape is say getting a 1-2K discount on it because fleets are buying it in bulk or whatever, whats the problem with selling an extra 20K of them or more vs not having those sales at all? I'm sure they aren't blowing them out at a loss...

I agree....I think it should do pretty well, especially if they're even more fuel effiecient along with more power (which I believe they are). 65fairlane
I want to personally thank the people in the KC plant for building my Mariner Hybrid! There is no inventory anywhere to be found now, so things are at the point that you must place an order to get one. With gas approaching $4, I get questions all the time about mine. I am sure glad I got one before the demand went through the roof. You've got to believe that Toyota and Honda are watching.
97svtgoin05gt
I really like mine, but in hindsight, I wish I would've waited for the PIP30 / 6 speed combo. That truly is the weak link in this combo.
kalu
I'm hoping this is because they aren't selling ANY vehicles to fleet... Not selling fleet F-150's, think again. Seems like thats all weve been building for the last few months. Id say were building 80%+ fleet vehicles.
