igor
Wow Igor............. good job !!!! That sure did shut him up. LOL Boy, it sure sucks when someone sticks reality right in the middle of your righteous indignation. :D there is a small chance we fell asleep before he read my post - it was late in UK by then but it IS true .. sure the labor is cheaper, but Ford once said they save as much a $3,000 per fusion imported to Brazil and Argentina .. that is A GIANT amount .. it is giant on the Fusion, and doubly that on a $12k Fiesta. we all should thank our congress ... it really is that simple. (oh and for the complete disclosure - the Bahia plant in Brazil will NOT tool up for the new Fiesta - it will only produce fiesta-derivatives: EcoSport and the new B-Max ... the reason being - it was woefully overcapacity for the demand in south america) Igor Edited November 20, 2008 by igor
V8 Ford
we all should thank our congress ... it really is that simple. Why? They don't set other nations tariff rates. Or did the Senate shoot down a free trade agreement with South America?
manbearpig
I can't wait until i can test drive this car. I always held off on gettin a smaller more fuel efficient car because they were boring to drive, boring on the outiside and had a bargin bin interior. This car, however, is hitting it out of the park everywhere. I love the looks. That interior is just fantastic and from what i hear they are pretty fun to drive too... all that and a slick DSG style gear box? Sign me up!! Ford Jellymoulds
it is not just cost of labor people it is exports ALL OVER LATIN AMERICA ... go look at our treaties with Brazil, Argentina, and any other country down south. With the exception of Mexico - ALL have tarrifs on US built products imported. thank your congress - as with the Fusion - if Ford plans to sell it south of Mexico - it will be built in Mexico - especially a B-car - MOST of the demand will be down there .. not in US or Canada .. igor Ford of Europe has Mondeo plants scattered all around Europe and not just one plant, so why can't you have one Fiesta plant based in Detroit. Mondeo's biggest market place in the world is the UK, they are the fleet car/rentalls No1 choice of car here, over one third of all Mondeo's get sold in the UK do we have a Mondeo plant in the UK, NO! 630land
Ford can build the B cars in EUR and charge a lot more money, since new cars are a luxury item in Europe. It is ironic that the #1 brand in UK is American. Jolly old England sure did a number on their home based car industry!! BL made some of the worst cars ever in history of the world. Oh an one more thing, we aren't your colonies anymore, and dont answer to any queen, like Canada. Ford made some top quality RETRO cars from the late 60's to the 80's that killed a boring bland British Leyland off, most Brits would have brought British Leyland back then if they could see boring shit Ford now produce today. Fords market share has dropped from 32% in 1980 to just 16% last month in the UK if you think this is a success then you are stupid, most Fords like the Focus and Mondeo's are sold as fleet/car rentalls to companies built on a reputation of Ford superb fleets cars reliabilty of the past like the Cortina, memories of fleet managers seem to be fading fast and so does Fords sales & market share here. Fords in the UK never used to be this boring. Edited November 20, 2008 by Ford Jellymoulds

theoldwizard
At $15 an hour for your new hire, build it in a fully modern flex plant so you limit the amount of employees needed. Would they really lose money? Ford can't hire anyone. They still have too many "old" workers. New hires are not allowed to "assemble"

Where would Ford be if they were still selling RWD Escorts and pieces of shit like the Cortina? OUT OF BUSINESS, that's where. Face it FJ, you're the only person who still harkens back to those days of Ford and even remotely considers them to be "good". igor
wait .. so Ford reveals some nice details on the Fiesta - like the fact that we will get a GOOD 1.6l engine (not rocam) and powershift, and all BON can do is bicker about assembly location? Whoever challenged me on my "thank your congress quote" - Congress approves foreign trade treaties - it makes no sense that Brazil can import freely into US, but US built products have about 10-20% import tarriff on them - we are the biggest consumer in the world - we should have import tarriffs - we are such a desirable market for foreign producers, we can dictate our conditions - which is why it makes NO SENSE - that US has so fre export opportunities - Congress was paid off not to care about it and it is hurting America more than the mortgage crisis, because it is costing US tens of thousands of jobs. about multiple plants .... Ford have plants that are able to build about 400k units per month. Ford will have 2 such plants for Fiesta products in the Americas: the Cuatitlan for Fiesta and Bahia (Brazil) for the derivatives. totalling about 800k units per year is about the most optimistic ofrecast for demand of that car on this continent. Makes no sense to build more plants and have them run at half capacity. It also makes no sense to have US plant just for patriotic reasons. Ford will build Focus for US, and Europe in US starting in 2010 .. that is their patriotic move ... between Focus and its cousins (C0-Max and Kuga) Ford will have 3 plants inthe US. Igor The US actually has several tariffs already in place against Brazil, the most notable of which is a pretty stiff tariff on ethanol. It's hardly a free ride. igor
true, but it makes no sense we cannot export .. none at all .. look at south korea - it can freely export to US, yet there are very restrictive rules in place for movement of good in the other direction. again - we are the market people want to get access to - we are the giant, import hungry market - we have the power to set the rules - at the very least they should be equitable. RichardJensen
Don't you recall Douglas Adams' observation that no one who wants to rule is fit to rule? But to the tariff thing: Increasing barriers to entry would not benefit the poor in other countries. While it may be argued that the poor in other countries are not the problem of the US, it may also be argued that our shared humanity is substantially more significant than any difference due to nationality. "No man is an island, entire of itself; everyman is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee."
