FJM, here's a clue:

the US only pays around 50 pence a liter for fuel, Europe's priority on ultra fuel economy is completely

driven by the prices you pay for fuel, take the taxes off and people wouldn't give a fig.....

With 50 pence a liter fuel, a 40 mpg Focus is cheaper to run than your 60 mpg Focus with 100 pence liter fuel.

You people in Europe are being robbed blind by government taxes.

Even in Australia with 1 pound per liter fuel, diesels are less than 10% of total sales,

the biggest market for diesels is in small and medium SUV and small trucks.

It was not meant intended to be a post on about fuel prices USA v Europe, its more about "aerodynamics" the bullshiters new Escape.

Engine technology is making the biggest improvements in MPG along with taking the weight out of the Escape, and things like adding low resistance tyre.

SAME SHAPED FOCUS, SAME AERODYNAMICS BOTH GASOLINE/DIESEL SOLD IN UK WHERE IS THE MASSIVE FUEL SAVINGS COMING FROM JPD?

Talking about fuel prices pissing you off though JPD, just had a holiday in Cyprus (A country with no oil) paid £0.74 a litre for diesel, UK price is £1.41 a litre (We have North sea Oil). Totally pissed of with Eurocar car hire company l wanted a Fiesta for a weeks test drive hoping her in doors would buy one. They upgraded me to a Nissan Note (Which l complained was a downgrade) which was total shit other than l liked the cute little frog eyes that stick up above the bonnet, otherwise it had zero charisma & personality, boring as hell to drive on the highway. It was a total nightmare from hell driving FWD Japanese shit. Cyprus is horrible its full of shit Nissan Notes & Kia Picanto crap hire cars, they had lots have nice warm friendly looking Pick-Up trucks but no Ford Rangers not one, l guess Ford must of pissed them off by setting up the Transit plant in Turkey they hate the Turks, loads and loads of lovely old Chevy pick-ups though. Spend lots of time drinking and not much time driving had a great time.

Ford has made no secret that it's plan is increased power train efficiency, then look at weight reduction and finally electrification.

And you're still missing the point I'm making, the reason Europe needs such extreme fuel economy is due to the taxes on fuel.

Other places in the world do not have that extreme measure so the cost of ownership and general driving is not as expensive.

Good for you FJM, The USA pays about the same for gasoline and diesel as you did in Cypress, can you now understand

that is normal for them, what you pay is not normal, it is full of tax and it's you guys that are changing to avoid spending lots

on fuel. The big difference is that people outside Europe don't have that drama, we get reasonably priced fuel that means

we don't have to seek ultimate fuel economy and engine selection is still more about comfort and pleasure...

Actually jpd, that works out to almost $4.50 per US gallon, if my calculations are correct. It's about a dollar less per gallon right now. At current prices and exchange rates, the price equivalent would be about £0.58 per liter.
