It wouldn't get that city driving in my area. Way too many stop signs, red lights and traffic. You'd be lucky to get 12 around town here.

I like to joke that rush hour means it takes me 6 minutes to get to Home Depot instead of 5. 😂

That said it also results in a lot of really short trips where the engine barely has time to warm up so that doesn’t help.

That is where stop-start shines in making an improvement in gas mileage.

To a degree yes but it doesn’t compensate for having to come to a complete stop then accelerate up to speed repeatedly.

My 3.5LEB F150 gets between 18-21 in local driving and 25-28 on the highway depending on speed.

That’s about what my Flex gets.

Wife had that on her 2018 Buick Encore with it's puny little engine. Result was 18.7 in the city. LOL. She had an 16 mile commute that took 60-75 minutes.

for some reason on Broncos, stop start works intermittently, especially if you have the doors off.

Without it she would have gotten 16 mpg.  LOL

Probably the safety with the push button start where it kicks on the engine when a door is open to remind the driver to turn off the engine. Is it when it gets put in park when it kicks on?

Like if you take your seatbelt off and open the drivers door it will automatically go into park if you're stopped/low speed.

Have to save the idiots of the world...

Bronco has a physical shifter so it doesn’t do that.

What was that a 1.2 turbo? her 2.0 turbo escape got 17-18. I don't think start stop helps much in stop and go. While waiting for a train, or a long light it will help more.

It helps any time you’re stopped even for a few seconds,  But obviously the longer you’re stopped the better it works.  I lost 2 mpg when mine stopped working.

Well then those little Korean built Encore motors must really suck without it.

And I'm assuming the only light at the end of the tunnel is when BOC and other battery plants come on line in the next 36 months or so?

The second Ford-SK battery plant in Georgia should be open in 2023. Perhaps that is why Ford is scheduling a 3rd shift for Maverick. They think they get now get enough batteries for some high in demand builds.

Plant 1 opened in 2022 and supplies F-150 Lightning

Plant 2 opens in 2023 and supplies ???

Plant 3 (Blueoval TN) opens in 2024 and supplies Explorer (that's a guess)

Plant 4 (Blueoval KY) opens in 2025 and should have enough to supply 2nd gen Lightning, and perhaps Escape too

Ford has separate investment planned with CATL to build batteries for 2nd gen Mach E for 2026. Was supposed to be in VA but who know where it will land.

Current Mach E and Transit battery is supplied by LG Chem which doesn't figure into Ford's strategic plan but Ford will probably continue to buy battery from it as needed.

Ford SK plant.jpg

If you are doing the math... Ford US should have 21.5 GWh of in-house battery capacity by end of 2023. Triple that to about 65 GWh by end of 2024, and more than double again by end of 2025 to 150.5 GWh. The CATL investment will add even more to the 150.5 GWh.

These numbers seem abstract so here are some comparison...

From January 2021 to September 2022 (so 21 months total), Tesla delivered 1.85 million EV equal to 133 GWh of battery worldwide. So if you are trying to put into context what Ford is thinking, basically it is scaling up to compete with Tesla.

Obviously Elon speaking and Elon time, but looks like Tesla is scaling up to move even further ahead in this sector https://insideevs.com/news/633112/tesla-targets-500-gwh-annual-production-4680-cells-in-nevada/amp/

That's an 100 GWh plant, which is quite big. 500 GWh claim is just typical Elon bluster. That factory would have to be much bigger to be capable of delivery 500 GWh of battery.

There’s talk of a higher speed production line that’s possible with  4680 can batteries that will leave pouch batteries in their wake.…probably why GM might  be rethinking its relationship with LG….

BMW is also looking at using the 4680 cells.  If you can’t beat Tesla, might as well join them and use the same technology.

It just feels like some battery standards may be starting to form but also Tesla looking at 4680 LFP that uses more manganese to replace some lithium. No doubt, they’re hunting for the “sweet spot” with battery chemistry, also the sodium tech looks interesting  at around 30% cheaper than lithium.

And yes, if Ford suddenly gets its C2 parts and batteries smacked into gear, w could easily an impressive 2023 H2 sales result…they really need to push Maverick and Bronco but also Escape and Corsair. Hybrids are the key here for C2s as they’re relatively low cost tech that works for gas buyers.

They are expanding the plant and I believe at SOME POINT they'll hit those targets, but I will agree Elon is generally overly optimistic on his timelines. Either way, the point was Tesla isn't sitting still and how much work everyone else needs to do to catch up (on the EV end, before someone tells me how many ICE cars Ford sells). Will be interesting to watch it all unfold and see if Ford can keep momentum going.

Ford’s biggest problem right now is EV capacity. Obviously with BOC under construction they’re working on remedying that, plus once some of the legacy ICE vehicles reach the end of their life cycles that will help too.

For sure, all sounds great in theory and looks like they're on the right path to make a big dent in the ev market in the coming years. Just hoping they can follow through without delays or changes in plans like we've seen so often from Ford in recent years. The demand is there, just have to build them now

The new third shift is slated to begin in July, and Ford will reportedly hire 1,100 new direct workers and 5,000 indirect employees at the Hermosillo plant to support the expansion, according to Jesús Gámez García, president of the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry.
