Medium-severity testing? At 15.5 m.p.h.? "necessitated full mega cast replacement". Yikes! Replacing the mega cast structural component is very labor intensive, and there is still all the exterior sheetmetal (aluminum) that would have to be replaced. https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-tesla-cars-totaled-easily-145255427.html Further, that all goes for a Tesla model Y, a substantially more expensive vehicle than the Fathom will be. So it's not an apples-to-apples comparison anyway. Again, the low price of the Fathom will make 'total loss' accidents more likely. But, it's still probably a good trade-off, all things considered.

About time! GM has offered Blazer EV PPV for several years now. Sterling Heights PD in Michigan has a bunch of them in their fleet. MME SSV should provide some decent competition for the Chevy

Yea, exactly. Getting Ford Fathom out the door right on time (or earlier), in very high volume, and with excellent quality should be the top priorities for Ford big shots right now

It's not just the cost of the parts, it's the cost of labor. Labor costs are astronomical, and I would wager, a larger expense than parts. Castings should help reduced the labor costs dramatically. -
Their domestic market overheating was probably an inevitable outcome, although probably one the government anticipated/initiated by cutting subsidies and telling companies to stop the price war and behave better in foreign markets. I figure we’ll see a controlled contraction and consolidation rewarding companies that both perform and listen to the government’s direction.

might want to check your facts Medium-severity testing at 25 km/h necessitated full mega cast replacement due to cracking and structural misalignment. “However, at £716 [$978] for the replacement component, the total repair cost remained competitive with, and often below, traditional repair methods for equivalent damage,” Thatcham said. The Model Y’s mega cast construction delivered consistent cost advantages across multiple scenarios, the release adds. Partial replacements cost £2,167 (about $2,961) less than the Model 3’s traditional multi-part steel rear sub-assembly construction, while full replacements saved £519 ($709). -
There is no repairability. I suspect Ford is trying to sooth the nerves of the insurance companies. The Fathom will be something of a 'throw-away' vehicle, its low purchase price coupled with gigacasting construction will likely mean a high percentage of Fathoms involved in moderate accidents will end up 'totalled'. But, the low purchase price is made possible by the gigacastings, so it's probably a good tradeoff. Comprehensive insurance premiums will likely be higher than a Maverick for instance, but after the Fathom is a few years old and paid off most owners will probably drop comprehensive coverage anyway.

These castings are awesome. I was worried about repairability, but it's great to see that Ford took that into consideration and baked it into their designs. -

Am I stroking out? I feel like I've been looking at this exact spec of a police mach-e for like 5 years.
