Ford Ranger sales post another gain in April

So...rather than just tweak the F-150 to make it more efficient, you think it is a better idea to literally waste a TON of money on yet another truck?

 

Maybe if the F-150 didn't weigh just short of an adult elephant, it would be more efficient. :idea:

Ford needs to maintain market LEADERSHIP in the "1/2 Ton" market. Unfortunately, that now means ridiculous payloads, towing capacities, and dimensions. The result of that engineering is WEIGHT. Just how it goes. The other way Ford can maintain LEADERSHIP is by offering the consumer more choices. The F-100 is another choice.

 

As for the TON of money, considering that it is going to be sharing much of its frame and many other components with the F-150 and will undoubtedly share powertrains with other existing vehicles, I don't think it will cost a TON of money compared to a lot of other new vehicle programs.

I guess the F-150 itself is utterly useless, since it has a Ranger below it and a Super Duty above it.

 

The Camry must be utterly useless too. After all, it has the Corolla below it and the Avalon above it.

I'm sorry, P71, but in this fragmented auto market, one size does NOT fit all. Plenty of people will want a truck bigger than a Ranger without the total bulk and ineffeciency of an F-150.

 

 

Then maybe they should DOWNSIZE the F-150 back to it's prior size. :idea:

 

Hey let's bring back the Ranchero too! Let's base it on the under utilized :redcard: platform so it can actually tow something. (post honest :redcard: tow ratings to boot) Remember, one size doesn't fit all! :ohsnap:

 

Reskin and update the last compact pickup on the market, the current Ranger, boost it MPG, throw in some advertising to that effect, and stop pricing it as high or higher than a F-150. Instant sales success! 2008 Focus anyone?

"Reskin and update" sounds so easy. Up-dating the Ranger requires so many changes to take advantage of tech improvements, that it's easier to start from scratch.

I completely agree with you as far as a Ranger redesign goes. Someone around here has stated that when new side impact regulations go into effect in 2012 the current Ranger will not pass and that is why it will be killed by that time. I have no idea what they are or how much it would cost to make the current chassis compliant. A reskin, a new interior, and some powertrain improvements like a new 4 cyl, Duratec 35 V6 and 6 speed auto would make this little truck really take off in sales with the current fuel prices. People are downsizing again and the Ranger can become a big player if Ford wants to do it right. The funny thing is that it would not even take that much to do it right. The Ranger just needs some long overdue styling changes and chassis improvements and it would be a winner again.

Besides, with the US dollar decline, a 3.5 V-6 F-100 might do quite well as an export. With fuel costs, the F-100 is an investment that Ford needs to make.

 

Hmmm......maybe could it be exported to the markets (South America) that still produce the old F-150? The F-100 could possibly replace those, while the LOBO (current F-150) could then it's rightful name (F-150).

I had a thought......what about an Escape looking Ranger? Use Escape's interior as well, with basic Escape looks on the outside. I'll do a chop sometime....

 

I don't know if it'd work sizewise, but it's a thought.

And ruin any hope of the F-150 remaining the best-selling 1/2 ton on the market. The F-150, like it or not, still needs to compete with the Silverado, Ram, Titan, Tundra, and Sierra. By downsizing the F-150, you make it instantly LOSE to all of its full-fledged 1/2 ton competitors in EVERY category except fuel economy. Sorry, but a lot of 1/2 ton buyers can still afford to buy gasoline (considering how many of these trucks cost over $40K), so that is NOT going to be the main deciding factor for many of them.

 

For that group where fuel economy WILL be a main deciding factor, let them have an F-100. They'll still have payload and towing FAR beyond that of the Ranger, but they won't have to make the same sacrifice as those buying the high-and-mighty "1/2 ton" F-150.

GM is introducing that El Camino-type thing. If it's a success, by all means, Ford, bring back the Ranchero.

I haven't seen any $40K Rangers. You can buy stripped down Rangers dirt cheap. You DO realize we are more likely getting an ALL NEW Ranger soon right? Why waste the time on a reskin now on a VERY VERY dated pickup (FAR more dated than the underpinnings of the '08 Focus) when a brand new one is only a few years away? A reskin to the current Ranger would still leave it with an unbearably cramped cab, no crew cab configuration, and overall dated proportions.

Ford will always need something like the fuel efficeint Ranger for the rest of the world to use, we are all not blessed with very cheap $4 gasoline like you are in the US.

Here you have Ford readying a truck that is exactly the size you both are telling them they should build. If it's indeed the right size for the market, then people will buy them. If enough people buy them, it'll start selling better than the F-150. Great! At least they will still be building something people want. So what if it's called F-100 instead of F-150?

Well then why is everybody saying it's going to be bigger?

F100 will be a mid-size truck

 

Ranger will return after about 18 months of hiatus and will be just as small (if not smaller) as today.

 

F100 <> Ranger

 

F100 is being introduced to

1) finally compete in the mid size market

2) to catch those that might be leaving the truck segment and especially the full-size truck segment.

 

The Ranger will return to every day workhorse truck.

obviously your grasp of different needs, payloads, towing capacity and up-fits leaves a LOT to be desired.....wonder why all manufacturers cover the compact, midsize and full size car parameters as well...beyond me completely taht people all have different needs, I say build one car thats it...the :redcard: no less, and all restaurants can only have one entre, there should also only have one TV show..."COPS" would probably suffice for you P, or maybe Oprah....hell while we are at it lets all become Communists and have all our decisions made for us....sure would make life easier wouldn't it P?...party of one....

You are being ridiculous and you know it. For all practical purposes, the only thing that's really changing is the names. Other than that, Ford's truck lineup will pretty much look like it did throughout the 90's. The Ranger will still be the Ranger. The F-100 will be about equivalent to a 1990's F-150. The F-150 will be about equivalent of what a 1990's F-250 was. F-250 is now more or less equivalent to what an F-350 was in the 90's, etc.

 

Ford is going to offer a truck THE WAY YOU WANT IT and it's still wrong somehow. I swear, you complain just to hear yourself.
