Deanh
It's the companies own fault for not fully funding their pension accounts when they were pulling in Billion during the truck boom. does Toyota or honda?

mackinaw
Why is Toyota and Honda making money and the American 3 isn't? Something that you don't hear on the news is that Toyota lost $350 million dollars in North America (read USA) during the first six months of their current fiscal year (April to September). Michael Reynolds
Because the Japanese government subsidized R&D, and gave them 0% loans. edit: Not to mention the protectionist system that dominates across the Pacific. If we did that here, the Big 3 would thrive! Good points, and I find it amusing how our government officials haven't done their homework. Instead we constantly get the 'you should have made products that people wanted'. Which, up until gas shot up in spring/summer, they were making products that folks wanted. It's a crying shame when our own government is so nonchalant about an industry that has helped this country get through key points in even recent history. They are 'too busy' to make a trip to Detroit to see what's really going on, yet demanding why the Big 3 need help. I get sick and tired of this spoon feeding of information mentality lately. They have the resources, by god use them. All it takes is a little bit of research, and compromise on both ends and we have a deal. And as for Mitt Romney, there's a reason why he didn't make it very far in the republican primary. His bright idea of letting the companies go bankrupt happens to be a great example. He, Paulson and Bernake deserve to be put on a floating iceberg out to sea. John Campbell, Dianne Feinstein and Barb Boxer will be getting a letter from me this week. Toyota doesn't lose money. Everything they make is echo friendly, perfectly executed and even their big Tundra gets 40 MPG.
mlhm5
wow...you sound like an ignorant senator right back from his lunch, scoth and cuban at Ruth chris ....someone that canhandle having an enterage of ten hashing stuff out and getting de-breifed in business class.....imagine acheiving that wasting 2 1/2 hours in checking in, having to book all those first class seats so everyone and the advisors can sit together only to piss off all the other occupants.....my guess is the corporate jet is a little better set up, more gets acheived at 30,000 feet, he arrives less fatigued and up to speed.... twintornados
What made me sick was watching those jackass Senators and then House of Representatives taking pot shot after pot shot to the auto execs...can you say pot calling the kettle black? Get fucking serious....they asked if Nardelli, Wagoner, or Mulally would work for a salary of $1.00 per year....give me a fucking break....would you senator?? Lets see....mega deficit, trade imbalance up the ass....hey, I got a great idea....lets do this for $1 a year....I half hoped Mulally would have gotten up and told them all to go fuck themselves, hoped on the corporate jet and went back to Detroit to fill out the bankruptcy papers....there ya go Washington...stick that in your pipe and bail out the workers now ya jackasses!!!! ANTAUS
I find it amusing that on all the press pics taken, you see Gettlefinger, (Yosemite Sam)...lingering...in the background. It's like the loser child you have, that you have to take with you, but doesn't say anything. Kinda reminded me of Newhart back in the 80s..."Hi, My name is Larry, this is my brother Daryl, this is my other brother Daryl". I'm surprised not much was said about the UAW, it must have felt like being in a room with a pink elephant.
lfeg
Industrial policy? who needs it, there is Toyota. Domestic manufacturing? Let Honda and Kia do that. Who needs manufacturing anyway, we can all trade pork bellies amongst ourselves and let the rest work at Starbucks. But what happens when no one has the big bucks for the campaign contributions? Both parties are morally and ethically bankrupt, and the individual members of congress have all sold their souls (and votes) to the highest bidders. And we fools reelected most of them. Yep, Pelosi, Dodd, Obama, and the rest of them are just sitting back thinking of new ways of fleecing the public. Anyone want to start a secession party? Cougarpower
as I was reading other forums about how the big 3 should go down it was interesting that the people that where saying that have not owned a domestic in more than 20 years, all they think its that the big 3 are still producing crap like in the the 70s and 80s
twintornados
I can understand that congress wants to see an action plan so that these mistakes don't happen again but for the sake of argument....Ford already has an action plan in place and is working it..... What is missing?? Get more flexible with production lines Stateside build Fusions & Fiesta's in Detroit watch Camry & Toyota sales sink. FOE 60-80's Fords were great, awesome Cortina - Capri's - Escort's killed off British Leyland its a shame the modern boring CAR crap has lost Fords market share in the UK it's dropped down from 32% to 16 % since 1980-2008 despite having an EASY ride & not having BRITISH LEYLAND in the market place to complete against in 2008. Jelly, I covered that in my original posting......but.....a "B" car being built in "The States" is not in the cards at this time....I hope that it will change.....The irony is, the CD3 is built in the United States......Mazda6 (the CD3 original) is built in Flat Rock Michigan while her cousins the Fusion, Milan and MKZ are made in Hermosillo Mexico..... Gotta say l hope the bailout committee forces & add strings attached that the bailout money can only be used Stateside, to build in Detroit & car loans that can only offered on American made cars so it only benefits the US economy not the Mexican economy. Then those daft bean counters will get proved wrong if Ford used the money to make their US based plants more flexible to built Fusions and Fiestas for the US market nothing would please me more to see US made Fusion sales hit 40,000 a month and knocking Camry sales down to 25,000 at the same time, still l suppose you can dream. Hope Mulally has the sense to leave the multi-million dollar business jet at home next time the bailout talks resume when it looks bad when your looking to get bridging loans, that did make me cringe a bit, that's something l normally find hard to do but Alan got to me a bit as l watched him step out the jet, First question l thought the committee would ask him was "How much is the jet worth Al".
