stpatrick90
Motor Trend Actually, it's 1.2 inches lower than a Kuga and 4 inches lower than an Escape. The Vertrek concept is 178.5 inches long overall, 73.8 inches wide, and 66.1 inches high. That's 3.8 inches longer than an Escape and 3.6 inches longer than a Kuga, while 10.3 inches shorter overall, but just 0.9 inch lower, than the hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox. Kuga's cargo space is considered too small, even in Europe, since it's not nearly as boxy and commodious as the Escape. The Vertrek's sleek shape improves aero over the Kuga by 5 percent. sullynd
Just plain aweful in every single way.

RichardJensen
Not a big fan of the '58 Mercury-esque D pillar--in any of its iterations on Ford products.
sullynd
The finished product will look good. No more dated box. It's a "me too" Kuga, with a mildly worked over VW front clip. I'm getting close to giving up on Ford. This thing is a BBOS.
suv_guy_19
It's a "me too" Kuga, with a mildly worked over VW front clip. more like an Audi front clip...I like it. The present Escape isn't bad, but it's becoming dated and boring.
rmc523
It's nice looking - I like it, but as an Escape replacement.....eh.....but then again, I'm one that has favored Escape keeping "truck-like" styling (something close to a mini-2011-Explorer would've worked) from the beginning of all this talk. sullynd
The overlap between this and the Edge will be very pronounced.
mustang_sallad
ya me too, I'd rather the Escape stay relatively truck-like. Normally, I'd call myself a bit of a Ford fan-boy, praising just about everything they do, but this one really doesn't catch my eye as is. Maybe it's cause it's clearly a concept car - i thought Ford was done with this kind of concept thing at autoshows?
suv_guy_19
They're not the same style of vehicle, and the Edge will still be much larger.
RichardJensen
The overlap between this and the Edge will be very pronounced. Maybe. This'll probably be significantly shorter, narrower, and lower than the Edge. It'll also be 4-cylinder only, and start at a lower price. mustang_sallad
did MotorTrend pull the article down? I don't see it anymore... Oh damn, the autoshow starts tomorrow? It snuck up on me! Sweet, no waiting!

They said they were done with concepts that they couldn't build (ala Ford Interceptor), not concepts in general.
sullynd
I hope they pull an Explorer America on this one and fix it.

ManFord
Yeah they pulled it down, they apparently jumped the gun. When are they supposed to release it? If you know.

probowler
Hmm, It's not bad, but I'm not really digging the oversized focus vibe this thing is giving me.Could use some work and it might be something nice, but as an escape replacement, no thanks. I'd like it to stay "Trucky" lol.
Moosetang
I think it's pretty hot. I would liked to have seen what Ford could have done with the more masculine direction that sketch from last month took, but if they're going the sleek route this does it quite well. BORG
Uh Oh, it looks JUST like the Kuga...that's actually very surprising. Still annoyed we are seeing a concept and not the production car, the concepts always ruin expectations on the final product. I think I like it, never sure what to expect in production. It's not ugly, but it's not that compelling or new either, certainly is a big improvement over the tin can Escape. Notice the Euro-plate, curious for a Detroit Autoshow debut and the fact that this car sells in FAR higher volumes in NA than Europe. I'm still really surprised to see a truely global Escape, wonder if they would actually consider changing the names so they can keep them all under the same nameplate. Vertex is such a concept car/porno name, surely they won't use that. Edited January 10, 2011 by BORG
FordBuyer
It's a "me too" Kuga, with a mildly worked over VW front clip. I'm getting close to giving up on Ford. This thing is a BBOS. I would imagine Ford is just doing a concept of any future Escape because they want to gauge show reaction to this concept before showing any production version. Get feedback first before proceeding to final designs. Ford I'm sure doesn't want to alienate all the Escape fans out there. Escape is a high volume vehicle for Ford and I'm sure they will do much consumer testing before putting any final design into concrete. The only sure things about the new Escape are that it will get highway fuel mileage of 30+ mpg, and therefore be more aerodynamic, and sit a bit lower. Another safe bet is that outward vision will be more restricted than present Escape. I also feel its safe bet that the new Escape will keep the name of Escape. Mulally will make sure of that. Too much brand recognition in present one. Ford knows Escape is bread and butter name. So I'm sure Ford is proceeding very carefully on design of new Escape and this concept is part of that careful research and feedback from this show. However, I doubt the production Escape is going to look exactly like this. Who the hell names the concepts? At first glance I thought I saw "Trebek." silvrsvt
I like it, it fixes the issues I had with the Kuga looking like a RAV4 clone, helps move the Kuga to look more like a truck, but yet is stylish enough to be a CUVish looking product. I'd give it an 7.5-8 out of 10 and with some tweeks would be a 9. BTW I saw a 2012 Explorer in Grey the other day at a dealership...its pretty stunning in that color. LincolnV
Actually, it's 1.2 inches lower than a Kuga and 4 inches lower than an Escape. The above concerns me the most. The Escape is the ideal 4WD winter driver and the ride height makes it that much better.
