My thoughts on Lincolns' naming scheme

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of this the other day and I had an "Ah ha" type thought come across the "brain pan" so to speak...

2 distinct and different levels at Lincoln.

1st is the luxury driving experience signaled by a naming scheme that brings honest to god names back to Lincoln....aka:

Mariner (I think the Mercury name fits well with Lincolns lineup)

Aviator

Zephyr

Continental

Town Car

Navigator.

Then have a 2nd line for higher performance and label the vehicles:

Mariner MKM

Aviator MKX

Zephyr MKZ

Continental MKS

Town Car...(ehh, never mind on that one, you don't need a higher performance Town Car)

Navigator MKN

Just thinkin' here.... :shades:

I dont have an issue with using Lincoln before the letters, I always say Lincoln LS so people don't confuse it for a Lexus LS, but the MK-shit is is the annoying part. MK this, MK that, MK momma, MK daddy, etc.etc. As we've mentioned before, years ago, Lincoln CS (Continental Sedan), Lincoln TC (Town Car), Lincoln LT (Light Truck), Lincoln LS (Luxury Sport), Lincoln LC (Luxury Coupe) etc etc. I would be ok with any other scheme. It's mark this, mark that, but wait, MARK is not on the nameplate, its MKZ MKT MKS that is the confusing part for most.

And really for most people out there that don't caer about cars and view them as appliances, when they talk to me about a Lexus sedan, few will give the correct letters and will just give up and say "the big one", so I'm like "Oh the LS?"...or other terms like it like "the daddy, not the grand pappy' (the GS not the LS), or "the little one" 'huh? ES or IS?" "Oh the sporty little one"..."Hm, IS then?". Maybe Mercedes and BMW might have the most recognizable letters/numbers,but that took many many many years.

Frankly, I think the names are least of the concerns for Lincoln. I think if you have a quality, unique, beautiful product, people will buy it no matter what it is called (I mean, unless you name it like The Hitler).

I prefer actual names too...something old school about calling your car by its name...but the alpha-numeric thing doesn't bother me that much. The thing that's annoying to me is Ford is quickly modifying and updating the razor blades to keep the designs current/fresh. For some reason, Lincoln's stuck with the giant grilles across the lineup. I like the application in the MKS, but the rest seem forced...That's just personal taste I guess.

The only Lincoln grill I don't like is the MKT. The rest are properly proportioned to the vehicle IMO.

Oh wow I forgot all about the Navigator... I always wondered how that made it through the design committee and how it was allowed to stay for so long... YIkes.

I'm ok with the thr grills but as stated, the MKT is just too much, too cartoonish. And as for the Navi, well its beyond hideous.

Well....I would rather see it called Town Car as opposed to MKT....which in my mind says "market"

Eh between those two, you lose either way. Either pick the name that sounds like something only old people drive or pick the one that doesn't make a lick of sense at all.

I've always said that Ford has sexually provocative names...You have Escort (gentleman caller), then you have Explorer and Probe (intercourse), Mustang (for those into size), Edge (most guys would know this technique), Ranger (for those with uniform fetishes) Focus! (what I yell at someone when they are on their knees), and now Fiesta (spanish for Party, term "Party" is a reference when having sex and using drugs), Fusion (when your "united as one sexually")...

I actually would perfer Escort over Fiesta. The Fiesta name is a disaster.

Nope, whatever you associate with "Fiesta" is not true for the mainstream. With a great product the name is elevated. The baggage you have with the Fiesta/Festiva is ancient history.

Since we are talking about Lincoln, the same holds true for the Mark III/Mark III, the unloved and slow selling 58 vs the neo-classic and hugely successful 68. The name is the same but the product was much different.
