Anyone see some similarities here?

I think the Kue concept and ultimate decision to be produced occurred BEFORE the Kuga was made public.

Regardless, it looks like a neat vehicle coming out for the Blue Oval. Even if it DOES look like a KIA. :shades:

It looks like it was sometime in late 06 or early 07.

The Ford Kuga sports FoE's 'kinetic' design language that debut'd first with the Iosis and then the Iosis X. The Kuga simply takes design cues from previous Ford concepts, not Kia's.

Iosis X

plus, I'm sure the Kia will be watered down substatially, and as said above, the Kuga concept uses the kinetic design which has already debuted on the Mondeo

sorry do not see the similarity .. none ...

The Kuga is a nice looking car .. but the name is wrong .. it means plague in some european languages ... Ford should have known that .. it's like LaCrosse and Nova..

Oh well ..

How about a Xavier Kuga?

As to the Nova:

Claim: The Chevrolet Nova sold poorly in Spanish-speaking countries because its name translates as "doesn't go" in Spanish.

Status: False.

If anything Kia is copying Ford, remember their cheap knock off of the windstar?

Kia is a real copycat. Now the new Sedona looks like Toyota Sienna. I wouldn't be surprised if they copy the new Escape rather blatantly and follow up by coping the Edge.

To answer the opening question - I don't see the similarities.

The headlights are smaller on the Kia, and the positioning of things in the fascia is different.

To an average buyer, the two vehicle pics I linked to are virtually identical.

I didn't mean to imply that every detail is the same. But one has to admit that those two vehicles ARE very reminiscent of each other. Look at the stance, the wheel flares, the roof line, the overall basic shape of the fronts, etc.

If nothing else, it goes to show the generic-fication of where vehicle design is heading these days.

I didn't knew the average buyer was blind.

Come on Lincoln, even the badge on the front is oval shaped. Kia's designer looks likes he is into cut and paste, Its not another Frank Abagnale on the loose again. Still at least Ford Interceptor should be safe from copycats, did the Interceptor designer hate chrome front grills, so he just wanted to get as much negative feedback as possible. Even though some of the minor components are different the overall concept looks the same as the Kuga, 4x4s are very much getting taxed off the roads in Europe at the moment ($50 a day congestion charge to drive a 4x4 in London, and Friends of the Earth are trying to get the annual road tax you pay every year to drive on UK's roads shifted from $800 to $4,000 a year, Toyota Prius costs only $70 a year, London Mayor Red Ken loves the Prius and lets them drive for free on London’s Roads with no congestion charge payable), l can't see it being much a big hit with the buyer. "Surfer types might like it for the beach" but l can't see them giving up their Beetles or Camper vans for one.

They most certainly are.

The "average buyer" also barely knows when or IF their oil needs changed.

The "average buyer" has also been trained to flock to Toyotas and Hondas.

Thus the recent (and well needed/deserved) "re-education" campaigns by GM and Ford.

And as far as the previous-gen Sedona being a 4/5 scale clone of the old Windstar -- I TOTALLY agree. I guess their mistake was, that they picked the wrong van to emulate. The Chrysler's would have been a better target at that time.

This time they definitely chose Honda/Toyota as their benchmark.

And don't get me wrong about the issue of "copying".... the Koreans created a science around it over the last decade. From what I'm starting to see online and in the pipeline though, that situation MAY be starting to change.

If the Veracruz is an indication, I'd beg to differ.

And when the Koreans choose not to copy we end up with disasters such as the wavy Elantra (ugh that car drives me nuts and gives me motion sickness at the same time) or the Azera with its nasty rear end.

Please would somebody let me know who gave the green light to the Kuga, FOE or FOA, why are Ford so out of touch with reality, most socialist governments in Europe think 4x4s are rich mans scum to be removed from the roads of Europe. Most of Europe’s 4x4 driving well healed would not be seen dead in a Ford and tend to think they should be parked round the tradesmen entrance, price tag & badge is the only thing most are interested in Soho and Chelsea when it come to buying tractor, high taxation will stop the working man buying these in Europe, so who the hell is this 4x4 aimed at? How many Kuga's are Ford expecting to shift, and how much will be spent of development costs, for such a future big sales flop. 4x4 sales are down in the US 28% as well. Sorry for the winging and sounding negative, but l can only see this as another big loss to Ford balance sheet at the end of each year and not an asset, so why do it?

Manufacturers are now responding to the changing demands of consumers. Many ‘new-to-the-market’ SUVs are noticeably smaller than the older, established models and many now only offer four-wheel drive as an optional extra.

Rising fuel costs, the spiralling CO2 debate and the associated social pressures are putting a strain on the SUV segment.

Whilst many buyers still have a desire to own these cars, there is a genuine need to make them cheaper to own and run. If not, it will become a segment in serious decline. Clearly, manufacturers respond to market forces and currently the market is being influenced by both a change in customer requirements as well as European legislation.

4x4s now make up 40% of the premium/luxury car market in Europe and are set to exceed 50% by 2010

• Upper medium car market down 17.7 per cent year-to-date

• Premium upper medium car market down 3.0 per cent year-to-date

• MPV and SUV segments continue to grow strongly as consumer demand shifts

The SUV market now has products slotting into ‘small SUVs’, ‘medium SUVs, ‘large SUVs and ‘luxury SUVs’ each one further refining the segment and drawing buyers from the traditional, established market segments.

“With manufacturers employing ever more sophisticated marketing techniques, consumer demands are becoming increasingly complex and many families now seek vehicles that better reflect their lifestyle aspirations,” says Nasir Shah, International Sales & Marketing Director of JATO Dynamics. “This has been one of the key drivers behind the success of the SUV and MPV markets where vehicles offer greater flexibility and greater scope for tailoring to individual requirements.”

They look similar to me. But like others have posted, most vehicles made lately kinda look alike.

I should note although I am not a fan of the european designed Fords, I like this one, especially from the angle shown.

I think it would sell well in the US

I just hope Ford are right, but just l can't see it myself. 4X4's are way beyond tight budget of the average families in the UK, with interest rates heading upwards, and with US type house price slump predicted in the near future, with gasoline price that will break through new barriers in the UK in August. Please can you tell me how will they find $800 to tax a 4x4 every year, and the $50 a day congestion charge for driving in inner London. Most rich folk that can afford to buy and RUN a 4x4 tractor, wont go any where near a Ford in the real world. How many will Ford sell and how much is the Kuga costing Ford to develop?

This is what the Edge should have looked like. I'm a huge fan of Euro Fords and would like to see the US cars go to more of the Euro Style and design. Look at a car that has been a success for Ford in the last 10 years. The Focus. The Mk1 Focus even though built in Mexico was designed and engineered in Europe.

What other vehicles have been a success for Ford NA in the past 10 years? Mustang: purely American design. Edge: purely American design. F-150: purely American design. I'd hate to see what a European-designed Mustang or F-150 would look like.
