I've never heard anything about Ka coming to the US.

I would seriously consider buying one with a hatch. Sedan would not be useful to me. No small friends or children.

My source isn't the most reliable, but he's heard that the SA-market Ka has been kicked around as an alternative to the 3-door Fiesta here, if a whole bunch of other cards fall into place. I don't think its very likely, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

First of all, is that South Africa or South America? Ford is in both. South Africa is right-hand drive.

Unlikely, as it would be another vehicle to get certified, to import what? A smaller 4-door? Cheaper to bring the 3-door Fiesta.

Y'know, this whole discussion of paying a premium for small cars got me to thinking about MINI and the BMW 1-Series. I think the MINI was done very well, but the 1-Series really gets dear. Well over $40,000. And they don't offer the 4-cylinder versions. And it weighs over 3200 lbs, which is a lot for a small car.

I rather like the 1-series, they did alot right. But pricing it in 3-series territory just strikes me as insanely greedy. I know the exchange rates aren't great etc etc, but I think marked a bit further down the 1 would be simply awesome.

South America. The South American (Brazilian) Ka is a left-hand-drive 3-door, it would fill essentially the same slot as the 3-door Fiesta for our purpposes. Ford has been bringing them up to Mexico but sales there have really tanked, to the point of the Ka getting canned in Mexico, so there is production capacity they could shoot our way. The only way I really see it happening is if somehow Fiesta production supply gets tight and it becomes cheaper to send us the Ka than to increase Fiesta capacity, as I said I don't find it likely but there we are.

IMO this car CANNOT come fast enough.

You are right Deanh this is Alan Mulallys first global car and this is going to be a massive hit for Ford worldwide. It's much loved by the Youngsters, young Mums and Pensioners in Europe and nearly every single one sells to the private buyer that will be a big profit generator for dealers and Ford.

I can see the new Fiesta hitting No 1 spot in Europe, and you might be in for a bit of a shock Stateside as to just how well it will sell, and l think it has the potential to knock the Camry off the top spot, and become the worlds best selling car.

With oil at a stable $100 a barrel the Ford Fiesta looks like it going be very big sales winner, so this looks like a win win for Ford all the way.

Just watch these numbers grow now

Ford's Fiesta is already a big hit in America, here is list the South American top ten best sellers cars, it already sells in a lot lot of other places around the globe, so it was nearly global already. It's going to be a worldwide hit.

Ford of NA has ignored the small car segment so long that it's no wonder they don't currently have big sellers. The Escort used to be a top selling nameplate. Making the right cars people will want to buy and making them cars that will become a first choice on people's lists will give Ford the success in the US that they have worldwide.

The Fiesta and the upcoming updated Focus are sure to make an impression with future buyers. The Fiesta looks like a completly well thought out design that is a knockout for the class car that it is. The warmed over NA Focus just looks like they reskinned the original Escort looking more like an Escort than the Focus it originally was.

With the new Fiesta, you can have really great looks and economy at a small price. It's about time Ford is turned into something that is no longer a passover or not a first choice to start looking when consumers are interested in buying a new car.

Ford’s new-generation global small car to be previewed at 2008 Geneva Motor Show. Its worldwide name is confirmed – Ford Fiesta.

New Fiesta is the first product of Ford’s new global product development process, with versions due for launch also in Asia and North America between 2008 and 2010.

European production of new Fiesta begins in fall 2008.

I like the overall style (for a B car), but the one thing I really don't like is the stereo controls. It looks a little 'function follows style' to me. I'd rather a modified brick (brick in center, extra/option switches placed around it and in stylish manner).

It's a tainted name.

If it wasn't associated with mediocrity, Ford dealers could easily sell more than barely 3 a month on average.

The 500 sold better than the new Taurus. 'Nuff said, and that's stronger than "Fusion".

The sooner FNA adopts the nameplates of winning products, the better we'll be.

Just because Fusion doesn't sell in Camry numbers doesn't mean it has a tainted name. I'm sure Fusion would sell more than it does if it were an established product. You have to remember that Fusion didn't exist just 3 years ago, and in many circles is still an unknown or little-known name. I'd say consistant year-after-year sales of 100K+ in it's first 3 years on the market is pretty good for a new-to-the-market product.

As to the 3/month average.....that's a problem of over-saturation of the market. There are many dealers that overlap each other, thus causing lower average sales per dealer.

Yes, but you can get BMW's 300-hp I6 in the little 1. I can tell you that motor is great in the 3, and could only be better in a smaller, lighter car.

You just don't understand...............according to many here, there just is no 'stylish' brick.

I like my stereo controls to be in a logical box. The same way I want my speedometer to be in a circle.

I do not get why some thing a brick is bad. It just has to be tastefully integrated. Like someone put some thought into it! Making it look all crazy only fools the noobs! Its fine if there are ancillary switches, but the core should remain a core. That way you don't have to feel around for counter-intuitive buttons just to accomplish a simple task.

Function-following-form is lousy art.

You mean this:

Looks kind of dull. Better a 3dr Fiesta.

That's the new Ka for South America based on the old Fiesta, and yeah I agree, it's shit.

Europe will get a different design based on the Fiat 500.

In any case it's a class smaller/cheaper than the Fiesta.

I understand....I agree that the brick could've been better integrated and more asthetically pleasing, but as you said, I don't think the idea of a brick is bad.

How much smaller is it? How much smaller can a car be while still having 2 rows (I assume the Ka has a second row of seats)?
