FORD SHARE INCREASES FOR SECOND STRAIGHT MONTH

 

* Ford market share higher than a year ago for the second month in a row; Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 118,818, down 30 percent versus November 2007

* F-Series sales totaled 37,911 including nearly 5,000 all-new 2009 model F-150s

BlueOvaNews – Ford, Lincoln and Mercury outpaced industry-wide November sales, thanks largely to F-Series truck sales, and grew its retail and total market share for the second straight month.

 

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealers reported total sales of 118,818 in November, down 30 percent versus a year ago, while industry-wide auto sales in November were down an estimated 35 percent as the weakening economy continues to take a toll on consumer confidence and spending.

 

“The economy continues to weaken and auto sales reflect this reality,” said Jim Farley, Ford group vice president, Marketing and Communications. “At Ford, we are focused on executing our plan. In 2009 and 2010, we’ll launch an unprecedented number of new vehicles, and every product will offer consumers the best or among the best fuel economy in its class.”

 

In recent weeks, Ford has received significant endorsements from independent third parties for its quality and safety. Ford’s initial vehicle quality is now on par with Toyota and Honda, and Ford now has more 5-star vehicles and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Picks” than any other company in the industry.

November marked the official introduction of the all-new F-150. F-Series sales totaled 37,911 including nearly 5,000 all-new 2009 model F-150s. Ford’s F-Series has been America’s No. 1-selling truck for 31 years in a row, and the new F-150 is designed and engineered to further raise the bar in the light-duty pickup market.

 

The 2009 model Ford F-150 has class-leading capability with 11,300 pounds towing and 3,030 pounds payload and unsurpassed fuel economy of 21 mpg highway with the SFE package, which is available on F-150’s highest-volume XL and XLT series.

 

The new 2009 F-150 also earned the IIHS’s “Top Safety Pick” award, the Texas Auto Writers Association’s “Truck of Texas” top honor and is projected to have the best residual value of full-size light-duty pickups according to the Automotive Leasing Guide.

 

North American Production

The company plans to produce 430,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2009. During the first quarter of 2008, the company produced 692,000 vehicles. The fourth quarter 2008 production plan is unchanged from the previously announced plan of 430,000 vehicles.

 

“We believe the economy will continue to weaken in 2009,” said Farley. “Our near-term production plan reflects this view, as we continue to align capacity with customer demand.”

I saw:

Ford -30.6%

Toyota -33.9%

 

The whole thing may not be pretty, but these Ford numbers are impressive. :reading: Especially when you consider that Toyota continued to run 0% financing throughout November if i recall. I believe Ford began the employee pricing in Mid November. Not that it mattered. Cars have been heavily discounted since August.

 

Toyota truck sales are down 36% in November. Ford -25% probably easily beating the rest of the industry... and that is with an aging 4 year old model.

Damn the MKS is the best Selling Lincoln this past mnth! Not too shabby for a car like this in this market. The Flex is still puttering along at 2500 units a month though...though I do wonder if/when the economy picks up if it will ever sell close to 100K units a year, I think 50-60K is it

We won't know how Land Rover/Jaguar are doing in the US they have gone all introverted with sales numbers T-Stag -146%?

 

Would love to compare Jag's sales figures to Volvo's. Bet Jag's are quite good reading. As for Land Rover, well sales may be as down as badly as Volvo's but because they are tied into Jag and have new models round the corner with much bigger margins then it's no biggie. Oh and the pounds taking a right old battering. Suddenly the UK's not such a bad place to make cars.

 

Back to Ford. Are the sales numbers adjusted to take account of sales days? I think Toyota adjust theirs don't they?

We shall never know T-Stag how they are doing if TATA refuse to put out their sales figures for the US, they were a lot worse than Volvo's last time l got to see any US J/LR numbers, so whatever you come up with is just pure speculation.

 

Volvo are doing a lot better in Europe than the J/LR group where they do publish sales numbers.

I am surprised how well the Explorer and Expedition did. The Explorer almost outsold the Edge. Escape is doing great in this market. Fusion and Focus are down...Flex is still a joke. Anyhow, I think Ford is being saved by the trucks and low gas prices.

If MB and BMW are taking a hit, you best believe Jag and LR is too.

 

Just drop it already. Jaguar is at best a niche automaker.

Volvo sell more volume models like the c30, so they would obviously sell more cars.

 

To be honest there is one shocking number that I saw today from Volvo. They have only sold 290,000 cars in the first 9 months of this year. Stop and think about that and what it means. Admittedly in a much better year for Land Rover (2007) JLR sold well over 300,000 cars a year. Those sales were made up of cars like the Range Rover and XJ which cost a fortune to buy. Relatively few X types and models like the XK (a niche sportscar). For Volvo a car brand that sells mass volume models like the C30, to fall below the 2007 figure for JLR is horrific because Volvo in 2007 were selling nearer 600,000 units which is where they need to be to make money.

 

All I'm saying here is that Volvo's numbers are getting more SAAB like by the day. I'm well aware that Range Rover sales are also dropping badly in the US and parts of Europe, but they are also making new sales in conquest markets and frankly margins on a Range Rover are obviously much higher than on a C30. Volvo needs to be much closer to Audi in sales number, but they are nowhere near. Ignore JLR if you like, why not compare to SAAB. They have a much much smaller range than Volvo but sell nearly 50% of Volvo's total sales.

 

I mean how many c30's were sold in the USA in a fuel concious market? 200-300? That's really, REALLY bad, compare that to MINI. I mean Jesus Christ it's bad!

I totally agree. But Volvo's sales are closing in on JLR which as you point out is a NICHE car maker. 290,000 units in the first 9 months of this year for crying out loud. Lincoln is doing better and they have had much less investment!

 

Please go compare to Lincoln, SAAB on like for like sales against investment. Volvo is a disaster whatever way you look at it.

Yes, Volvo is a mess. So is JLR. I'm sure Ford is so glad they no longer have those nightmares on their balance sheets anymore. Now drop it with the Volvo crap. Can we focus on the REST of the lineup? It's not like Ford is depending on Volvo for its very existence. Let's move on.

Ok................ we all hoped that we would get rid of Tstag when Ford sold Jag/LR................... and it didn't happen.

 

If they sell Volvo, will he then go away???

 

Guess it is just wishful thinking.

 

He'll start talking about the need to divest Mazda. Then, after they sell Mazda, he'll insist they sell Ford of Europe to BMW or SAIC. :rolleyes:

The Flex will do better when the Taurus X is killed.

 

Both the MKS and Flex will do better when the EcoBoost is out.

I agree the Flex will do better when Taurus X is gone, to a point. I'm not sure how much EcoBoost will help it though. I don't think a lack of power has been one of the major complaints about the Flex. Then again, are there any major complaints about the Flex? People simply aren't buying premium vehicles in this market.
