Gnostic
I wonder why in Europe it just didnt carry the Capri name if it resonated well with consumer, rather than using a sexual connotation (Probe) for its' name. ... In German the word "probe" means test. I used to get question all the time asking if i was testing a new prototype. LOL.
ANTAUS
Well I find Ford uses alot of sexual innuendo names.., an anal Probe, a paid Escort, an anal Explorer, a sexual stallion (Mustang), Marquis de Sade, etc.

silvrsvt
His never really had any major paint issues though that I can recall. His was Laser Red. My sisters '92 Probe had oxidation issues, so did my dads/my 86 Escort GT and both where red color without clearcoat

retropia
Does anyone else remember that the Probe was originally intended to be the next Mustang? At that time, the Fox platform was getting kind of moldy, Ford didn't want to put any more development money in it, and they thought a FWD Mustang based on a Mazda platform made perfect sense. I remember a big letter-writing campaign to Ford, urging them to not kill the "real" Mustang.

chevys
I believe the number of complaint letters was somewhere around 180,000. I remember it well and one of those letters was mine! I threw a fit and told them if they killed the Mustang I would never ever buy another Ford product and I meant it! Evidently, I was not the only one and I remember a Ford executive(cant remember who) that said the customers called them everything but a white man and were pissed off. Ford back in the day had no clue how important this car was and how it could effect their other sales. Thankfully, they wised up. Lots of Mustang owers also have F150's, Fusions, and so on. Right now Im stricken with a GMC truck next to my Mustang but I swear to God almighty my next truck will be built by Ford. No more GM for me and I will not support socialism and to me that is what I would be doing if I buy from GM or Chryco. I will not do it and the product does not matter to me. The govt is picking my pocket every day I bust my butt and Im sick of it. I will be damned if I will do business with a bank they have bailed out with my money or a car company. Im taking a stand. Will they miss me? No. But they might miss millions if people did the same. Edited September 9, 2009 by chevys
rmc523
Yeah, I remember it. I wasn't that interested in the Cougar until they showed that concept. That looks pretty good....certainly better than the regular one they came out with.

630land
I think some at Ford leaked info about the FWD Stang to get people to protest and save the RWD car. After that, Ford was never 100% behind the Probe. And then renaming the successor as Cougar didn't help. However, FWD coupes are a trendy market, in one year out the next. Ford spent $$ making more Explorers in late 90's and it was a good idea at that time, but they needed better cars. BTW: The Escort ZX2 was not a Probe replacement, but it supplanted the Escort GT. NickF1011
and for god sakes why cant cougar fans write 180,000 letters to ford! Because there aren't 180,000 of them that aren't already served by other vehicles on the market most likely.
retropia
I never noticed it before, but it looks like the Cougar concept car is wearing rear-wheel-drive wheels. They don't have that FWD offset.

joihan777
The coolset Mercury Cougar comcept I saw was at the SOny Metreon in Frisco... it had a see-through hood and lights everywhere. People remembered the lights... no one remembered what car it was. I have a neighbor down the street with a 2nd Gen Probe. Looks like it still runs good but the paint is shot. They sure were pretty enough: Here's the new 2010 Probe: :shades:
