New Mondeo to get turbo boost

Make way for the new Mondeo! Insiders have revealed the replacement for Ford’s big-selling family favourite will be more upmarket, stylish and efficient than ever, with a range of hi-tech turbo engines.

 

Coupe is on the cards, too!

 

To keep up with the ever-expanding choice offered by rival manufacturers, Ford is planning a wide range of Mondeo variants for the next-generation model.

 

And, in addition to a saloon and a more practical estate, a Mercedes CLS-style Coupé is on the cards to take the fight to the well received Volkswagen Passat CC.

 

This would also be aimed at stealing sales from models such as the Audi A5 Sportback and forthcoming BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo, and would feature an even more rakish design.

Looks like the the Brits are going to screw up another American car ! Remember that the Fusion will be identical to the Mondeo except for changes to meet emission and safety standards.

 

If that picture is reasonably accurate, there will be no rear seat head room for any over about 5'4" ... just like the Contour, which also had no rear seat leg room !!

Don't forget that the engineering is now in the U.S.

 

The design is being led by Moray Callum and his team. I heard him speak and he said a designer's greatest challenge was making a 4-door car interesting, but he was liking where the Fusion/Mondeo was headed.

 

I took that to mean that the next generation would be more like the VW CC rather than today's sedan. Not sure if it will look like the sketch or not. Also not sure what gives and takes there will be on package.

You've got a thing about blaming the Brits haven't you! Also have you met the average native male Brit? Over 6' is very common.

 

Ford UK lost passenger vehicle engineering a while ago to Ford Germany and gained all their powertrain work. And this didn't happen overnight either, Ford UK has not developed an entire "passenger car vehicle" for well over a decade. So if your going to blame anyone then blame the Germans. Anyway as pointed out this is Autoexpress and they rarely get anything right.

 

PS. Do you still believe the 4.4 V8 diesel was designed in the US?

I wouldn't put too much faith in the rendering because the car is still three years out. However, I am curious to see how well the next gen Fusion turns out. The Mondeo is one of the best, if not the best, FWD sedans in the world. It still gets rave reviews for its chassis tuning. I think the current Mondeo is quite the looker too. The Fusion is really building a reputation for quality and reliability, I have a feeling the next generation model will gain even more ground on the segment sales leaders.

Gotta say l would have never guessed the next Mondeo would have looked like that surprise surprise :hysterical:

 

Still the good bit is the Booooooooooost Bar! The Duratec is dead, long live the Ecoboost (Ignore the Eco and think of the Booooooooost)

 

Booooooost's high efficiency and low CO2 will see Ford through the next level of EU emission regulations and it should help cut the huge CO2 based road tax bill you pay in the UK every year on a gasoline Mondeo which is £400, the Econetic CO2 Environmentally low C02 is just £120 every year. Thats the boring bit

 

Good bit is the booooooooost engine is turbocharged only meaning the tuning potential is fast, and in a few years time, it will be perfect transplant fodder for old Classic Fords.

The Mondeo CC would probably outsell any Sierra/Cortina now days. Though sending the Falcon there and here would be nice.

Mondeo has never been Britains best selling car during a year, but it was 2nd best selling car just once.

 

Bring the Falcon to the UK would be nice, as it outsells the Mondeo in Australia when they complete against each other in the same marketplace.

Did you miss the part where he said "NOW"?

 

1967, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981 aren't now...or even close to now.

 

And the Falcon likely wouldn't sell for squat in Europe. It's simply too large.

I worked with a lot of Brits (at Ford) in the 80's and 90's. Only 1 was over 6'.

 

I hold a grudge on them for the Contour. My teenagers (both shorter than 6') could not sit in the rear unless I moved the seats forward. My 2 door '91 Escort GT had more rear seat leg and head room !

 

Anyway as pointed out this is Autoexpress and they rarely get anything right.

No, there were folks from both sides of the pond involved. As a matter of fact, one US engineer who worked on the base engine described it as "2 Pumas made into a V8". Most Americans think it is related to the Lion.

It's an AutoExpress article, so who knows what the car will look like.

 

Considering that it will share a platform with North American product, it is interesting that AWD was not mentioned.

or RWD or diesel...or :stirpot: And actually ed, given the current styling trends, I would NOT be surprized if the finished vehicle is surprizingly similar, fingers crossed.....
