sullynd
Ford just announced a High Performance BEV SUV at NAIAS! Thought it deserved its own thread. https://twitter.com/mrlevine/status/952662214674141184
Anthony
I've been watching the Ford presentation. They showed a Mustang and an Explorer drive into the Corktown facility and "something" drive out super fast (so fast you could not see it). Mach 1 though? Not sure about the name, keep that as a Mustang, not an SUV.
sullynd
So... Wonder if this is the start of CD6? What if CD6 can do HEV/PHEV/BEV? Is that asking too much?
sullynd
I'm wonder if "Mach 1" is not a vehicle, but a "brand" for BEV ala "Ecoboost". Explorer Mach 1 = Explorer BEV?
silvrsvt
I took it as the battery powered Mustang. Not an explorer BEV.
sullynd
I took it as the battery powered Mustang. Not an explorer BEV. That's fine, but Mike Levine called it an SUV, so that rules out a Mustang.
Anthony
They never mentioned SUV in the presentation, but this is what Mike Tweeted:
sullynd
Others have reported it as well. I think the Mustang/Explorer/lightning thing was supposed to be some sort of Frankenstein combining of the two.
Steve557
Terrible name choice, Mach 1 should not be used for anything electric never mind an SUV. Shame on Ford.
rmc523
I'm wonder if "Mach 1" is not a vehicle, but a "brand" for BEV ala "Ecoboost". Explorer Mach 1 = Explorer BEV? Hm. But they trademarked PowerBoost (I think that was it). I took it as the battery powered Mustang. Not an explorer BEV. Me too.... The presentation seemed to allude that it was a hybrid of some sort - as they referenced a Mustang sound and then an electric sound, and then played the two together. But then that Mike Levine post makes it seem like it's a pure BEV.

I don't mind the use of Mach 1 on an electric. With powertrains moving away from ICE, there won't be anything left to put Mach 1 on otherwise. sullynd
Confirmed as BEV SUV from Ford. https://twitter.com/ford/status/952669356177096704 Inspired by icons. Developed by #Ford Team Edison. Born in Detroit. A new all-electric performance SUV. rmc523
So I guess they intended for it to mean performance of a Mustang, with electrification/SUV
rmc523
Can I add more fuel to the fire.... My brother noticed that they used a Mustang convertible in the video.......should we pay any attention to that???

With powertrains moving away from ICE, there won't be anything left to put Mach 1 on otherwise. It's not like the ICE is disappearing, plenty of other names to use. This is the kind of decision we will look back at in 20 years as an equivalent to Shelby Dodge Omni/Charger.

Its also an easy way for them to say look were moving forward, were using a storied name on an electric!
The Handler
So, is this what the Model E was supposed to be? I'm not crazy about them using Mach 1. Edited January 14, 2018 by The Handler
Steve557
Its also an easy way for them to say look were moving forward, were using a storied name on an electric! I don't see many people buying that, with the Bullitt back today I would have figured the Mach 1 edition was due in a few more years? This name choice is not going to go over well. Name it eco trash whatever but to dig up a historic Mustang nameplate is just wrong.
02MustangGT
Give it a year or 2 and we will have a new CEO with new ideas and the electrified SUV of the future will be named Fusion.

Yup and 10 years from now we will have a Mach 1 special edition Mustang to restore the nameplate powered by a V8.

mackinaw
Terrible name choice, Mach 1 should not be used for anything electric never mind an SUV. Shame on Ford. i don't mind that it will be a BEV (electric motors have nearly instantaneous low speed torque, I wouldn't be surprised if this vehicle had a 0-60 time of about four seconds), but I'll always associate the name Mach 1 with a Mustang. Meh all the historical Mustang name plates should always stay V8. Base model electric is fine but never a Boss, Mach, or Cobra electric or turbo V6. mackinaw
I just read that Mike Levine has clarified his previous statement, now saying that Ford is researching the name Mach 1 for a future vehicle.
