Economies of scale.  The Maverick shares a lot with the Escape and Bronco Sport.

Not to mention, they don't have to put $3k on the hood to sell them.

The Maverick does not benefit any more from economies of scale than did Fusion which shared its platform and most of its interior with the Edge. Nothing has $3K rebates now other than possibly the Ecosport. You’re comparing a brand new model to a neglected one that was long in the tooth which is apples/oranges. The Maverick is a very good vehicle, I wonder though if Ford is making any money on the base and XLT models that sell for less than $30K.

C2 supports more vehicles globally than CD3/4 did

C2 sales are well over 1 million per year, if not 2 million. CD3 probably never went past 750k.

I’m sure it does although most of the sales would be non U.S. as the U.S. C2 vehicles are on pace to sell less than 350k this year. Regardless, I doubt that economies of scale for a volume of 750K would differ much from 1 - 2 million, particularly when the bigger volume is spread over more models and countries which will require additional differentiation.

Fusion was just as unique as all the others, which is to say not very unique at all.  Sedans just don’t offer much opportunity for differentiation and option packages compared to trucks and utes.

This is true and to a degree, Ford was caught refreshing/renewing European Focus, escape and Mondeo for North America, those evolved designs while cost effective in the early 2010s.

I would argue that Ford took too long unifying the company and by the time they did, those Euro based designs were already running out of time as buyers moving onto utilities but particular kinds that Mulally banned discussing - Bronco & Ranger we could have had years ago.

Originally, C1 and EUCD were very close cousins, even CD4 shared a lot of the power train transmissions and electrical switchgear plus all were developed to use a standardised construction process.

On top of that the new enlarged Mondeo is now C2 based so all the arguments about scales of economy are there if Ford wants to chose more products - I realise that they don’t need them, not essential btw

Think engineering and product development cost.  Spread that over 2x the number of vehicles and you have considerable savings.

C2 is a further development of C1.  CD3 was Mazda based. CD4 is a Ford platform that is a further development of EUCD. EUCD shared a lot of development with C1.

edge never shared anything interior wise with Fusion aside from the company-wide switchgear.

Fusion

They look to me like they share quite a bit including the IP.

Edge had identical interior as S-Max.

You need to get your eyes checked then.  Aside from switchgear and gauge cluster, they don't share anything.

They may have similar visual design cues/themes, but that's far from being the same.
