ANTAUS

the good news about them moving up in global sales: they more they move up, the more scrutinized they are and the more of a target they become :) here's to #2!

this should have happened sooner, but couldn't have come at a better time IMHO

Don't bash on Toyota right away...

o

Ford has the worst greenhouse gas pollution performance of all the Big Six Automakers. (From Automaker Rankings 2004, a recent report from the Union of Concerned Scientists)

o

The overall average fuel efficiency of Ford’s fleet today is 19.1 mpg, dead last among the major automakers according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

o

Since the oil crisis of the 1970s, Ford has ranked worst in overall fuel efficiency of all major automakers for 20 out of the last 30 years.

o

From subcompacts to SUVs, Ford’s current car and truck fleet gets fewer miles per gallon on average today than its Model-T did 80 years ago.

o

In 2003, Ford broke its promise to America to increase SUV fuel-efficiency 25% by 2005.

o

Ford is fighting federal and state efforts to improve emissions standards and implement fuel efficiency market incentives.

o

Ford is supporting the filing of a federal lawsuit to overturn California's popular new vehicle emissions standards, the nation's first-ever law of any kind to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to global warming and the most advanced automotive GHG reduction targets in the world.

o

Ford dismantled its electric and natural gas vehicle programs, including the popular all-electric, zero-gasoline, zero emissions Th!nk City cars and Ranger EV pickup trucks.

Ford is still in dead last place in fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions for the sixth year running.

I guess BMW isn't a major automaker? They are the only automaker to be fined by the EPA for failing to meet CAFE over the past decade.

So does everybody else's car and truck fleet.

So is every other major automaker in the country.

Lighten up, you bitter old man.

Ford does need to improve in this area. However, don't compare totals. Ford has such a high share of its sales coming from trucks that it is very unfair to compare to a Honda or a Hyundai that sell far more of their fleet as cars.

Sales-weighted averages are the most realistic figures to go by, otherwise GM would have you believe they're the greenest company with their "we make more cars that get 30mpg highway than anyone" ad campaign. CAFE is flawed legislation to be sure, but the math is right on.

Bottom line:

"Green" people need more productive things to do.

Ford already meets existing CAFE requirements, puts out their fair share of PZEV, ULEV, and LEV vehicles.

The greenies just don't want us to have cars at all, they want us (the unwashed public) to take the bus, and they won't be happy until that moment arrives.

It makes me so unhappy I just want to go club a baby seal to feel better. Stupid greenie Communists. :censored:

But the math just shows that people prefer foreign cars, but domestic trucks. So domestic companies get penalized for selling what the customer wants to buy from them while the foreign makes get more profitable. I don't think it's the logical way to influence what is essentially a customer decision. CAFE did nothing for decades to change public perception, the only thing that worked was rising gas costs. CAFE is essentially useless.

Here's another Ford vs Toyoda twist. Can't remember for sure if it's the 2.0 liter or the 2.3 liter 4 banger in the Focus, but one of them puts out less emissions than the Pruis does. I want to say 2.3, but I can't say for sure.

So a full gas beats a hybrid on emissions?? And what does the green crowd say about that? Not much, because they don't want to hear it. Too busy patting each other on back for buying a hybrid...

CO2 aside (an unavoidable byproduct of the oxidization of carbon-based molecules--there is CO2 in exhaust for pretty much the exact same reason why you exhale CO2), the V6 Explorer and Mountaineer, along with all 4-cylinder Fusions and Milans, and the Focuses sold in California are all SULEV II, and all have cleaner emissions profiles than the every non-Ford hybrid.

That's right. A FOUR LITER V6 which burns three-four times as much gasoline over a city mile than a Toyota Prius generates fewer pollutants during that same mile.
