This. People need to realize basically every business/product operates at a loss for a time, the more you invest, the longer it generally takes to recoup those losses and start turning a profit. Ford's invested billions of dollars in EVs and yet people can't figure out why it's taking years for them to become profitable, which is ridiculous.
It's the same mentality as KFC spending a billion dollars on a new factory, and when they first open, and sell their first item, reporters write articles saying KFC loses a billion dollars on every item they sell. It's just not true.
They did not lose billions on sedans. They just weren’t very profitable and the market was shrinking so they shifted resources to Ranger, Bronco, Bronco Sport and Maverick in addition to EVs. EVs are still a growing segment even if it slowed down and the reason it’s losing money is its engineering new vehicles and batteries and building factories that are not yet generating any revenue.
Maybe you and Joe should go share all your misinformation and EV hatred with each other.
I always see people likening EVs to golf carts as well, it's such a lazy argument. Last time I checked, gas powered lawnmowers were a thing. Yet it would be ridiculous for me to compared a mustang GT to a lawnmower because they both share the same basic fuel type, but that's exactly what the people comparing cars to golf carts do because they're both battery powered.
You’re still confusing sales success with profitability. Most people want at least a compact or midsized car or crossover but sometimes es they can only afford a subcompact. Subcompacts only sell on price which yields very little profit. When people buy vehicles they like or want they’re willing to pay more (Bronco Sport exhibit 1). That’s why they discontinued Fiesta and Ecosport and shifted those resources to EVs.
They are but the prices aren't coming down because they aren't significantly cheaper. They are still in the build out phase of making more batteries and paying for the plants that make them. Maybe in a few years the price will drop more, but inflation isn't helping things either. I'm guessing that we will see a decent price drop in the next 5 years with LFP batteries being common place and available. I can see batteries being like electronics-the latest and greatest CPU when it comes out is like $500 bucks, but when the next gen comes out 2-3 years down the road, the price is like $250 then.
The argument about the larger/more expensive batteries is the engineering triangle-you want a bigger battery? You'll get more weight and space taken up by it to include it being more costly. I think Ford is seeing that there are limitations on what they can do-trying to sell an EV as a profitable vehicle gives to too many short comings in things it actually needs to do (i.e. work as a truck), so its better to focus on other areas where it makes more sense to have an EV type product at a profitable sales rate like a mid/smaller truck like vehicle or a CUV.
Being cheap doesn't equal being successful either. That was part of the reason the sales where so good, was because it was cheap. Did GM actually make $$$ off it? Most likely not.
But yet have you even driven an EV? Sounds like you already have your mind made up before even trying it.
So its pointless to even have this discussion with you because you assumed its nothing more then a golf cart.
Do not sell the new Ford CE1 short...just because you don't like an EV, does not mean everybody agrees with you. The losses you trot out include the costs associated with ramping up a new way of designing, building, selling and the "after sale" associated with EV....Ford was smart to break them out as separate entities, not for you to pick apart, but to honestly show investors where the gains and losses are....I see those losses going away soon as Ford puts the EV market on it's ear moving forward.
First off the market has almost no demand for sedans and there is nearly no profit on them
Why would you chase that 16% when Ford is strong in SUV and Pickups with customers?
As for the Escape/Corsair-no place to build them unless they are imported from overseas, which is going to mark them up at least 10%. They aren't going to take away from Maverick and Bronco Sport sales.
