You are confusing two different awards. The NA COTY award is given by auto journalists from all over the US and Canada. The 2010 Taurus won a poll of Detroit News readers. The Big 3 do very well in Michigan (the reason is irrelevant, the fact is that they do), so a favorable reaction towards their new products shouldn't come as such a surprise. I'd be more surprised if they reacted unfavorably to them since that would either signal a significant change in tastes on the part of the consumer or a significant change in product on the part of the Big 3.
