new mercury capri concept coming

Recommended Posts

I dont mean to just rebody a Mustang and turn it into a Lincoln MK9. The next-gen Mustang platform (and possibly the next gen Falcon) could be given a "luxury" suite of upgrades ( IRS, etc) to make into a proper Luxury RWD platform that could underpin a MK9 and a MKR.

In my mind, the MK9 should be a smaller version of the MK9 concept from a few years back with a "New-Lincoln" front end. Make it a hardtop convertible with EcoBoost V6 engines.

The MKR should be Lincoln's CTS/3/C/G37/IS competitor, a smallish midsize sporty RWD sedan. This would make the MKS move up in price a bit and should gain AWD as standard equipment. The MKZ could then be allowed to really concentrate just on the ES/TL/TSX/A4,etc competitor.

In any case, the MK9 and MKR could basically be a hardtop convertible and sedan versions of the same program, with shared engines, platform, and possibly even interiors (at least the dashboard).

I had one of the last 86 Capris built. They must have been running out of parts as mine came with a Mustang GT molding on the driver's side and the correct plain molding on the other side. Ordered in the spring and took delivery in early summer of 86. It was a 5.0L, 5-speed with 3.08 gears and T-tops. Med gray metallic with charcoal interior. Fun little car. Dangerous as hell in the winter though. :shades:

:reading: +2 Mercury deserves something hot.

Cougar gets my vote.

The most interesting "tell" of this picture, is the body color they choose to feature.

It certainly is not exactly a hot, high performance, attention grabbing, color, is it?

Walt...you do know that RMC did the photochop of this car (nicely done I would add) and that this picture did not come out of Ford Motor Company...

I think so many people who go on these car sites have serious delusions that RWD sports cars/coupes and sedans are going to return to their heyday of decades ago. They will not. If there was a market for a model above the Mustang then sure, call it Cougar, I would love that. But it is not going to happen, the market does not exist, at least it is not big enough.

Yea, those idiots down at Lexus that build the SC and ISC coupe and infiniti building that G convertible are practically bankrupting their company building these cars....plus no one wants them....

Ford's late European late 60's Capri was a massive hit for FOE nothing else came even close in europe to its sales success, it out sold most of British Leylands bread & butter cars in the early 70's British sales charts looked like this

1. Cortina

2. Escort

3. Capri

4. Some British Leyland Austin 1100 with superb handling :hysterical:

I talk to a lot of Capri owners and read a lot of stuff about the Capri. Most say the same thing, they miss the Capri now its gone but hate all the new Capri's concepts, they look nothing like the original at all saying the look the same as a Focus and would not buy one. Why the big disconnect? Mustang are kept true to the original in the USA why does it not look like a Focus? Most said they would buy a new Capri if it was kept true.

I work in a group that seems to be into owning convertibles. There is my Mustang, a Thunderbird, and the rest are all Sebring convertibles.

Why are they all into their Sebrings? Simply, rear seat space.

IMHO, if Ford could develop a stretched Mustang with most of the space being added to the rear seat area, I think there would be market. Not a huge market. But if the additional R&D costs over a Mustang are kept low, there should be enough sales to support a market. I mean, how much does it cost in extra R&D to take an Escape, and turn it into a Mariner?

For a name, it would be a Lincoln/Mercury Cougar or even simply XR7 (Lincoln seems to like three character names like that lately).

Differentiate it from the Mustang itself, by putting an Eco Boast engine in it, something I have read that has been eliminated from the 2011 Mustang. Replace the aluminum internal trim with real wood. Maybe even an LCD instrument cluster, borrowing heavily from the FFH dash.

I don't think FMC's financial well being, will only achieved by reducing the model range down to, what, just the Taurus and the F150.

Sup,

Maybe Ford should entertain the Miata. If they could get the chassis they should make that the Capri. It would make a nice little 2 seat roadster, and would not cut into the Mustang being it would be 4 banger nor a real sports car. Then they could take that convertible concept, rename it the Cortina. Finally the world would have a Cortina that wasn't completely unimaginative and derived. Jelly would be happy and the forums would hit equilibrium once again. God, I have to much fun.

Yeah, I did that chop, but that was a Ford color for the Focus CC, so I dunno....

Thanks. Well, technically the picture I used did come out of FMC.....I took the Focus CC and made it into the Capri you see.

Not worth it at this point.....too little return on investment right now - look at the Solstice/Sky. Ford needs to concentrate on the core lineup (which they're doing), and when profits are back up, then they can entertain ideas for sports cars and more limited-production vehicles.........although anything to get FJ to stop talking about the stupid Cortina and the "bland boring and dull" EVERYTHING might be worth looking into.... :shades:

If the only criteria for offering a model was very large sales volumes, and FMC reduced its total lineup to just its two largest sellers, from that very very very long list of yours, which two do you think it would be?

I picked Taurus and the F150. What's your two picks?

Actually it would be the F-Series and Focus. Tides shift.

Capri is perfect for the Euro-Sporty car... just as it was from '71-'77. I also owned a bubble-hatch Capri... an '86 5.0. The last Mercury muscle car!

Hey, me too. Mine was a medium gray metallic 5-speed with T-tops and 3.08 gears. Fun little car. Squirrely as hell in the winter though. :hyper:

Actually I would think the Fusion will remain a much higher volume seller then the Taurus. If you only could build "one" carline you would have to go with the Fusion because it is the swiss army knife of the current Ford sedans.

I don't even know why anyone brought up this idea. Ford is a "full line" manufacturer today and will be in the future.

500,000 Capri Mk1 sales Stateside in the early 70's good, Merkur XR4Ti 42,464 & Merkur Scorpio 22,010 Stateside in the late 80's not so good.

Capri concepts

l don't like the generic Ford corporate front ends that have started appearing on everything Ford does, it was alright on the Fiesta & Ka that was great, but please don't put it on everything, it becomes boring. The Capri was rebel not a corporate image, you don't see a corporate front end on the Mustang, so why make a Capri front end that looks like a Focus please don't.

Do you really think ANY coupe ANYWHERE is going to sell 500,000 units ever again? The markets have changed. It'll never happen, no matter how "old skool kool" it is.
