RangerM
Link to Story Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told foreign automakers to share their technology with local businesses or they will be told to leave the country. Chavez gave the ultimatum to Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Fiat during a public ceremony in the Venezuelan capital. There was no immediate response from the companies, which all have assembly plants in Venezuela. If his demand isn't met, Chavez said, "I invite you to pack up your belongings and leave. I'll bring in the Russians, the Belorusians, the Chinese." --more at link--

Edstock
Ignorant yumpum, but par for the course. He's jealous of Brazil's industrial development, and his clumsy "socialist" planning has turned Venezuela into a basket-case.
2005GTP
Why is it called socialism when Chavez takes over companies but necessity when Obama does?
LincolnV
government sanctioned theft. Ford should just pack up and leave. Chavez can have those crappy Russian and Chinese cars. He's also been known to seize foreign assets. Just ask the oil companies. If Ford announced that they were going to pack up and leave, they may not get the chance to pack up. He could very well walk in and say "MINE!" Who knows, maybe in a couple of years Venezuelan's will have the opportunity to buy the Bolivarian Explorer with the Ahmadinejad trim. Mark B. Morrow
Why is it called socialism when Chavez takes over companies but necessity when Obama does? It isn't even close to the same thing. GM and Chrysler came to the Feds hat in hand for a bailout. They got taxpayer money with strings attached. If they had no other options that was due to their poor planning and mismanagement. Chavez is an assclown who wants to take their assets and technology. I would support Ford leaving Venezuela and concentrating on Brazil and the rest of South America. Let Chavez have Russian and Chinese cars. We'll see how popular that is with his countrymen. LincolnV
We'll see how popular that is with his countrymen. It's the people who can't afford cars that vote for Chavez. The citizen's who can would like nothing more than to see his ass thrown out of office.

The citizen's who can would like nothing more than to see his ass thrown out of office. That is undoubtedly true. I don't think the Russians or Chinese will set up shop in Venezuela of share their technology with the locals. Either way it won't benefit the people at the bottom who need jobs. Pioneer
The last Ford workers, after stripping and destroying all proprietary documentation and tooling out of the plant, should set it on fire.

atomcat68
The irony is that the Communist Chinease ARE using GM, Ford, VW (among other Capitalist builders from Capitalist countries) to build cars there. And this is how they will get our technology. We partner with the Chinese, they have it and they will pass it along to Chavez. So even if we refuse, Che... ummm Castro... I mean Chavez still gets it. Edstock
Look, Venezuela doesn't have the infrastructure to support "high tech" car manufacturing. They don't have enough people with the technical education, they don't have all the small service industries that sub-assembly manufacturing plants require. The Chavez socialists also resent the educated techies in their country. Anyway, IMHO, with plants in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, if Chavez forces the situation, it would not be of great importance.
