RichardJensen
Empirical results are not bad, given that the 5.0L V8 isn't the top engine option on the F150, and the tester was preproduction. JasonM
...and given the Ford was burning 87 octane as opposed to the Hemi and GM engines. We all know how engines "lose big power" when using only 87 octane.
Bryan1
Plus regular gas in the F-150 is 40 cents a gallon cheaper than the premium gas PUTC put in the Silverado, Sierra and the Ram. I'll also add that PUTC made no mention of this when they scored for fuel "economy." Edited January 9, 2015 by Bryan1
akirby
The 3.5LEB really should have been used against the GM 6.2L. They could have just said bring your best gasoline engine and not specified V8. Considering that and the $8K price difference, it wasn't a bad showing.
Hydro
The GM's 6.2L are Beast. The 5.0L had no chance. It made a great showing, especially shaming the Ram and toyota 5.7L's. GM's 14.3 sec 1/4mile times are down right nasty. You're talking sports car realm with those times :eek5: .
traxiii
It would have helped to have had lower gears in the diff. too.
RangerM
In my mind, "light duty" doesn't conjure up something as large as 6.2L, but a respectable showing by Ford nonetheless.
351cid
Wonder why a 5.3L wasn't used in one of the GM twins? I think we all know....

twintornados
I understand the concept of a "V8 challenge" but seriously....they pitted the 5.0L Coyote against the 5.7L Hemi and 6.2L Vortex? Does anyone understand why Ford opted out of putting "big" motors in their half ton trucks? Even though fuel prices are currently trending downward, that will soon end and prices will march right back up there, leaving GM and FCA whining and scrambling for capacity changes to address their short fall....A question for RAM...what happened to the 4.7L V8? Kev-Mo
Interesting observations: 1. 1240 lbs of rock salt puts the Dodge "several hundred pounds over its payload rating" Can you scream "weak truck" 2. Ford 5.0L performs right on par in every test with the "legendary" 5.7 Hemi - gosh, talk about the mighty Hemi living on perception and outdated reputation. 3. Toyota, for all their customer loyalty and swagger, still can't hang. But their owners will swear under oath that those trucks are superior- go figure. All the Toyota fanboys screaming foul in the comments is classic! 4. Kudos for Chevy with those big powerful engines and best in test gas mileage - they are doing something right! I would choose the Ford hands down - but I am a Ford guy. I drove a 2014 F-150 5.0 Crew Cab rental. It was real nice truck and performed magnificently. akirby
GM has always done good with transmissions and fuel economy. Gotta give them that.

I don't understand They told them to send their best V8 powered truck under $55K. GM chose the 6.2L. The 5.0L is the only V8 Ford makes now. fordmantpw
I guess by specifying V8 only was the only way they could have a test the F150 would win?

Deanh
@twintornados....easy...Ford stopped putting the 6.2 in the f-150 for one reason...take rate was trivial, and the eco boost does everything better.
