rmc523
So if that is the outline where does Explorer fit in? Large 7-seat CUV (branded as SUV).
silvrsvt
Large 7-seat CUV (branded as SUV). Well that's where it gets confusing...the Expedition is actually that product..a large SUV IMO..this should be the line up going smallest to largest: Ecosport-CUV Fiesta Active-CUV Escape-CUV Edge-CUV Bronco-SUV Explorer-CUV Expedition-SUV

bzcat
Well that's where it gets confusing...the Expedition is actually that product..a large SUV IMO..this should be the line up going smallest to largest: Ecosport-CUV Fiesta Active-CUV Escape-CUV Edge-CUV Bronco-SUV Explorer-CUV Expedition-SUV Not that confusing when you break it all down. Explorer is large CUV (the next gen will for sure get bigger to better line up with size of competition like CX-9, Atlas, Traverse etc). Basically, if you look at the CUV/SUV landscape today across the entire world, there are 3 basic branches of product offering: SUV (rugged vehicles with transfer case and sometimes solid axles), CUV (mainly FWD SUV looking things), and cars/wagons with extra ground clearance (e.g. Suburu XV & Outback, Audi Allroad, Volvo Cross Country, VW Alltrack, Opel Country, Skoda Scout, Ford Active, Mercedes All-Terrain etc) So Ford's line up should look like this Subcompact CUV: EcoSport Car with extra ground clearance: Fiesta Active Compact CUV 5 seat: Escape/Kuga CUV 7 seat: Escape/Kuga? (next gen will probably have a 7 seat option to replace C-Max Grand and also for China) SUV: Bronco 2 door??? Cars with extra ground clearance: Focus Active Midsize CUV 5 seat: Edge CUV 7 seat: Edge (China only for now but it seems logical that it will replace S-Max eventually) SUV 5 seat: Bronco 4 door SUV 7 seat: Everest Cars with extra ground clearance: Mondeo Active Large: CUV: Explorer SUV: Expedition Cars with extra ground clearance: Mercury Turnpike Active Edited June 9, 2017 by bzcat

I'd expect the Explorer to be more like RWD car then RWD Truck though suspension wise, which would be a major factor between CUV and SUV. The utility market is getting so large that having multiple similar utilities is ok as long as they are somewhat differentiated.

The utility market is getting so large that having multiple similar utilities is ok as long as they are somewhat differentiated. The new Expedition is 4 in longer than the old one -- that is over a foot longer than an Explorer. Also if the Bronco is going to be a true off road the vehicle will not be that much longer than the wheelbase for approach and departure angles. If a vehicle like the Everest is developed there is very little cost to bring it here, even if they only sell 25K and profit 6K per vehicle you're looking at 150million in profit, from people that would not be looking at a Ford otherwise. An Everest buyer is going to be different than a Bronco/Edge/Explorer buyer.

tbone
I think there's room for the Everest as long as it doesn't cost much much to implement. I see it as a 4Runner competitor, not an Explorer or Bronco competitor.

ice-capades
Or maybe a lot of Mustang buyers are holding off for the 2018 model and all its engine and gearbox upgrades Mustang sales always spike when the new model comes out as the enthusiasts all want to be the first on the block with the new Mustangs. Afterwards, each model year sales tend to drop off. The most sensitive sales rate is for the Mustang GT's as those are the most loyal and knowledgeable buyers. Our store has actually been reducing Mustang inventory, even going into the Summer season. Unfortunately, Ford pushed back the Job #1 Date for the 2018 Mustang to October meaning that the new car won't arrive until December probably. As such, any dealer outside of the "Sun Belt" won't see sales benefit from the new 2018MY model until next year. Another Ford Motor Company blunder with product timing! ice-capades
Over time, models tend to grow in size in order to beat the competition. They continue to grow over the product life cycle until they outgrow their size class and then usually get replaced with an all-new model. This trend continues still but I can't help wondering how Ford or any of the other manufacturers will be able to meet the future CAFE requirements. Just a thought. Technology, the 2017 Civic has more interior room than the 2005 Accord yet is lighter, gets considerably better mileage, has way more features and to top it off sells for thousands less when you factor in inflation. It's actually pretty amazing.
