I agree. The holistic issue is that young people are poor(er) than previous generations. When operating from an income and wealth disadvantage compared to the majority of car buyers, it is smart to spend as little as possible on a vehicle that meets most of your needs. Its Illogical to buy an expensive vehicle to purchase, operate, and insure when you aren't financially secure. Driving is Expensive The used cars are former new cars, and a Fleet mix heavy in Larger Trucks and SUVs, which are more expensive to operate and insure. IMO it's hard for young people or anyone without a lot of money to get excited about buying an expensive liability, especially since driving isn't a choice in most of the US. https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AAA-Brochure-Your-Driving-Cost-9.2025.pdf I think automakers make choices based on the level of effort, competition, and risk Developed on an existing volume platform, the Maverick was a low-effort, low-risk Vehicle with no direct competition. It shares high-value components (engines, trans, suspension, etc.) with other volume products and was developed alongside the Low-end Bronco Sport. I don't think Ford would have developed the Maverick if the Focus had still been sold in the US.

My 20 year-old son drives a Milan, and has no desire to have an SUV. He would like to have a Fusion. -

Trust me I had to grit my teeth and hold my nose. Still not a toyota fan but she didn't like the Escape or the Bronco Sport and Edge is gone. Her fiancée is a die hard toyota fan who drives a Tundra so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. But it's her vehicle and that's what she wanted. And honestly it's pretty nice and gets 41/38 mpg. And the buying experience was very good.

True, and Twin-Traction-Beam didn't do much for ground clearance or unsprung weight.

Teenagers, rebelling against their parents. Who would have ever predicted that! 😮
