Ford announcing an aftermarket company’s modification is ridiculous, IMO

Think “Shelby” in this case.  It’s a factory built Mustang leveraging the RTR nameplate.
…..

Ford calls the new Mustang RTR EcoBoost “the most exciting enthusiast focused turbocharged Mustang ever,” pointing out that this is only the second time in the Mustang’s 60 years of existence that a co-developed performance variant been sold by the automaker from the factory.

Yea, yesterday Ford announced Mustang EcoBoost RTR, tuned by Vaugh Gittin Jr's company. Ford didn't mention pricing or specs yet, but if this package is between $5k and $10k, it could be the ultimate value buy for Mustang

I’m probably not the target market for this vehicle, but I am a little surprised that people are interested in that busy of a wrap. It looks like camo for a test vehicle. Of course, I am the person that removes all the graphics from any vehicle that I have.  I hope they sell a ton of them though.

eh, if this is all they have going, that’s not good.

Wasn’t it a Detroit Auto show debut?   Autoblog, motor1, motor trend, car and driver, even diarrhea of the mouth Ford Authority didn’t even report on this vehicle

Most of those automotive media outlets published an article about the RTR.  I agree with your point though, this car should be a Ford Performance variant.

I think that is the point-it is supposed to be a like a camo covering, but I don't think its a production option.

Nah it looks like it just came out a couple days ago going by this:

https://www.rtrvehicles.com/blogs/news/rtr-announces-ford-factory-built-mustang-rtr

Its dated January 9th of this year.

The other thought I had about this, is RTR started almost 20 years ago and kids/teenagers back then are now old enough to maybe start thinking about getting a Mustang? Its sorta like Shelby making a comeback with the Mustang in 2005...I knew what Shelby did in the late 1960s with the Mustang in the mid 1980s (plus he was working with Dodge at the time) when I was a teenager, so its targeting people who hear/know of a "legend" and want to buy something that is associated with it? The Shelby name doesn't resonate as much with younger people, I'm also guessing. Not to mention the people who would know of Shelby during his hey day might not be able to fit into a Mustang easily as they once did to, because of age lol

unchecked the latest news section of all the sites I mentioned and didn’t see it anywhere.

I sent a screenshot of the RTR to my son, and he loved it. It must mean I’m old, lol.  Since this is going to be an eco-boost only package, I anticipate it’s aimed at the younger generation and will hopefully be reasonably affordable.  The younger generation is also more acceptable of the four-cylinder, so it gives them something Interesting to aspire to.

I currently have new Ecoboost money, but honestly, I need to start thinking about buying a starter home or something first. The Ecoboost is great, the only reason I'm leaning towards the GT is I want my first mustang to be a lifelong ownership experience, and the v8 just feels more right for that sort of thing. But if I just wanted an affordable coupe, the Ecoboost would be the one to get.

If it had been paid off, I'd have kept my GT.  I loved it, it just wasn't practical (it was fine as a daily just going back and forth to work, but when you did need to get larger items, it wasn't good lol), and I wasn't going to have 2 car payments lol.

I’m imagining an Ecoboost Mustang with Dark Horse parts and power upgrades but built on the assembly line and just using the tuner’s name..

If the above is true, it probably makes this performance version of the Ecoboost Mustang fairly easy for Ford to do.

It’s a no brainer especially since they already had the Ecoboost performance packs.

This arrangement with RTR is interesting. I think Ford has a vested interest in keeping the tuners engaged with Mustang platform and they are probably testing out a few things to see what sticks.

If this is really OEM from the factory (all the preview article says it is "factory-tuned"), it is likely just a re-naming and change in marketing of the previous Ecoboost performance package. Not that different than Ford licensing the Shelby name before.

True and as Akirby said, it’s a no brainer considering Ford h already had the EB performance packs. Dedicated models would make forward ordering of parts easier.

I’m sure RTR and Vaughn helped with tuning but the parts are definitely already available including some dark horse parts according to RTR.

I like rtr. I think this will be good for the ecoboost. Lower trims usually don’t look as good as the higher trims and this fixes that.

It’s  good that Ford is at least trying to cultivate more Ecoboost sales,

they hit a brick wall in export markets as most foreign buyers prefer V8,

mostly because of the elevated prices charged.

The people interested in an EB drift oriented audience are completely different customers. In any regard, the more EBs sold, the better it is for meeting CAFE.

Yea, but meeting CAFE is gettin' harder and harder. Next year the CAFE target for a car with the footprint of a Mustang coupe will be more than 50 mpg. Ford needs to sell more Mach-E and also introduce electric versions of Mustang coupe. Not just for CAFE, but to keep up with competition

I think your math is off:

Mustang 189x75 inches= 15ftx6.25ft= 93.75sq ft

Even an Ecosport (smallest recent Ford) comes in at 78 sq ft

The Fiesta comes in at 72 sq ft

Also CAFE is figured at the unadjusted ratings from the late 1970s, not the current standard of today.

So an Ecoboost Mustang gets 26 MPG combined and CAFE ratings are about 20% higher, so it gets 31 combined

a Standard Mach E gets 91 MPG combined, so that would be 109 MPG overall, helping to offset the Mustangs CAFE.

You're using the wrong numbers in that example. For S650 Mustang, the correct calculation is [63 in * 107 in/144] = 46.8 sq ft.

2026 CAFE target for cars with that footprint is about 57 mpg
