Making something that controversial looking in a segment that values tradition is a recipe for disaster.

Totally agree.  I like Tesla, but I would never consider buying the Cybertruck. I like traditional truck styling, and the Cybertruck is polarizing.  Their other vehicles offer pretty traditional styling, which is why I would consider them.

It was a mistake to deviate from the general shape of trucks.  There were ways they could have pushed the styling envelope without deviating too far. I think they would be selling more of them otherwise.

The "big-shots" are officially calling the Cybertruck a flop. They moved about 39,000 units last year.

Glad that Cybertruck is officially a flop. Not glad that this clusterfuck of a product still managed to beat F-150 Lightning in sales last year.

Even with the headwinds facing Tesla’s Cybertruck, it did manage to nab top spot among its peers on the EV pickup truck sales charts, edging out competitors such as Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Rivian’s R1T pickup. The former is estimated to have sold about 33,510 vehicles, according to Cox Automotive data, while the latter moved around 11,085 units.

Rivian’s big problem is price. I can’t really pinpoint one thing “wrong” with the Lightning. Ford recent quality reputation and dealer experience is probably holding it back more than anything else.

Lightning was more successful even though it sold in a relatively low number as it is related to F-Series while Cybertruck is a bespoke vehicle with little to do with the rest of the Tesla line. Rivian is starting to turn a profit at the lower numbers.

I'm a pickup enthusiast, but for me, the massive weight of an EV pickup is a show stopper. I don't want to drive around a pickup that weighs 7,000 - 10,000 pounds. I'm hoping the Ford midsize pickup coming on the new skunk-works platform is comparable in weight to traditional midsize pickups.

That’s not a problem unique to Lightning though

I believe what happened is Tesla was looking at the truck market, which is obviously very lucrative, but brand loyalty is also very high. They almost certainly did something along the lines of "If we don't try anything bold, we won't be able to pull buyers away from those other brands" which isn't a bad line of thinking. But the execution was just horrid.

Not even the design, I can kinda get past that. But the price and range when comparing the concept to the production model was a massive disappointment.
