Mach 4 Trademark Filing Suggests Four Door Ford Mustang Incoming

Recommended Posts

I saw this yesterday - it seems that with Farley's comments, it's on its way.  We'll see how it does!  I wonder if its sales numbers will go into the "Mustang" tally, or if it'll be a "Mustang Mach 4" line item?

I think this is a good way for them to re-enter the sedan segment - they can keep prices higher than a "Fusion" but still have a sedan entrant.  That said, I don't see sales at crazy levels.

Are you messing with us? My heart can't take it lol. If if is s650 based, does that mean it's gonna use a lot of the same sheet metal, just extended, or is it gonna be a completely new top hat riding on the s650 platform with its own unique styling?

I didn't think s650 could be stretched to handle a 4 door but I'm pleasantly surprised.

My main concerns:

1. The Mustang is already on re-re-revamped bones, and is likely to suffer in comparisons to more recently engineered sport sedans.

2. With the nebulous nature of the EV market, are there scraps in the budget to keep some ICE R&D going? The various engines across the board have been almost stagnant (minus the Dark Horse 5.0). The turbo 4s are seemingly forgotten, the V6s are far from class leading...yeah, I have concerns.

3. Dilution is an obvious twitch. The MACH-E didn't phase me, with EVs being literally legislated in many markets...but, a Mustang sedan can NOT be a Lincoln LS-esque "shoot for the middle of the market" gaffe.

How much do you really need in ICE development? The current engines can carry Ford with minor updates till middle of next decade. CAFE might see a pause of 4-8 years but all it takes is some sort of oil shock to drive prices up and with cell pricing dropping and getting better, automakers will want to go the EV route because they are cheaper overall then ICE products to build and develop.

The Mustang sedan isn’t going to be a huge player in the market sales wise-they’ll be lucky to sell maybe 50k of them a year-it helps ford with CAFE and profit.

I see nothing inherently wrong with the S650 platform or the current engines and transmissions.  Who has something objectively better?  Sounds like you just want change for change’s sake.  And where are these other non luxury sports sedans?

You're pretty judgy, and not in any good ways.

This is a time where Toyota is getting 300 hp from turbo 3 cylinder engines, Benz is getting 400 from 2 liter 4s, Dodge will be shoveling power into the Charger variants to keep something relevant there, Hyundia/KIA are actually stepping up the power/performance games, and so on....

...so, I find your position to be one of defending lethargy in a market that is always changing. Having been around a good while, and remembering the world seemingly out-engineering Ford and Detroit as a whole on more than one occasion...I called these concerns, and think that there's plenty of room for just that. Failing to keep up with, and/or lead, the Joneses has had Ford in very deep trouble repeatedly.

We’re specifically talking about S650 where the 2.3L ecoboost is at 350/350.  The Coyote v8 has 450, 500 and 800 hp versions which Toyota can’t touch or even come close.  The 2.7 or 3.0 is available in between if needed.  If they want less power the 2.0 is available.  There is zero reason for Ford to invest in new engines for Mach 4 unless it’s a hybrid.

Make it available with a proper 3-pedal manual and I’ll definitely be interested. Otherwise I’ll keep my Fusion until the wheels fall off.

I would argue they don’t even need to invest in a new hybrid for this, take the PHEV powertrain from the Aviator GT, tune it for a Mustang (with hopefully a boost in power, not just gear ratios) and bingo. Shouldn’t need to break the bank on that.

I wonder what the timeline for this is. The next gen mustang is likely to get a new platform, and the sedan version likely would along with it. So if this sedan is s650 based, that means we should see it sooner rather than later. If it's riding on s650, I don't see this being the sort of vehicle we have to wait 3-5 years to see.

Dealers were already shown some mach-ups about 8 months ago, so it's already pretty far along. Is it possible they show us some sort of concept for the mustang birthday celebration in April this year?

I'd venture to guess it would be in the next 24 months or so.

The ICE S650 is supposed to be around till 2031 or so IIRC
