  3. Is Ford ready to produce ventilators? U.S. President Donald Trump exhorted both Ford and General Motors to do that ASAP.

  5. Seems to be an excellent power plant. I’m assuming it will be available in the Fusion Sportswagon and possibly the NG Edge.

  6. Thank you jpd80 sir for sharing that detail from the Ford engineer. In any case, the Atkinson cycle version of the co-developed Ford/Mazda 2.5L engine works well with the power-split hybrid system in the 2020 Escape, and according to Car and Driver is actually quieter than the Toyota 2.5L Dynamic Force engine used in RAV4 Hybrid.

  7. Except that it's not Mazda derived, it shares the same capacity and bore span but everything else is different. The original shared engines you're referring to were actually co-developed by Ford and Mazda. I've spoken to a Ford engineer who was part of those projects and he confirmed that they were indeed co-developed.

  8. That was 51k retail sales only. Fleet sales haven’t kicked in yet, If sales drop too much it’s bad but a small drop is ok if ATPs are higher.

  9. I hate to admit it, but it seems like the only fuel-efficient and/or fuel-robust engines in Ford vehicles are Mazda-derived. The 2.3L GTDI in the Explorer is also originally the Mazda L engine.

  10. Sorry. I should have said the were #1 in sales in 2007 and #2 when they declared bankruptcy. Point remains exactly the same. 8 million u it sales but losing money like crazy.

  11. If they're just stockpiling them, they don't need them.... at the moment. I'd be hesitant to give NY more right now if other states are short, but eventually they may need them. Just have to make sure everyone gets their fair share and no one is left completely out to dry.

  12. Other than the stock price and sales of the F150 - and no other product produced by Ford even comes close to the sales volume. If your basically a "one product company" it has a possibility to be clouded future.

  15. Yeah, I heard they were going to allow blood transfusions in emergency cases. Apparently the technique has been around since the early 1900s(?), Cool stuff.

  16. Thanks Dr. Oz. Get it? ? In all seriousness, I agree with what you described. We have an entire world of scientists/MD’s working to identify remediation tactics for this pandemic. We will get thru it and be better for it eventually.

  17. From what I gather, there's an initial response from the immune system while it devises a strategy to best fight the foreign virus attacking it. If the body can't develop a strategy quick enough, you get sick and possibly die. Some people have holes and gaps in their immune systems which leaves them more vulnerable. It's those antibodies that stay with us that gives protection from reinfection until the virus mutates like influenza does and we have to get new flu shots. Those antibodies will also show us which folks have had covid-19 and are now safe to go back to work, their antibodies could also become a cure for people that are really struggling with covid-19.

  18. Here's one for now, I'll take more if we have a sunny day this weekend. I haven't been able to take any accurate pictures of the medium slate interior... the shade of gray comes out too light like you'll see online. So the pics don't capture how luxurious it looks, especially with the GTs engine turned aluminium trim.

  19. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-51214864 From the article: "The fever, and generally feeling grotty, is a result of your immune system responding to the infection. It has recognised the virus as a hostile invader and signals to the rest of the body something is wrong by releasing chemicals called cytokines. These rally the immune system, but also cause the body aches, pain and fever."

  20. 5% benefit to the EPA City cycle fuel economy number is about right and it's huge. Some serious weight-shaving would be lucky to net 5%, and I can assure that costs more than putting the start-stop hardware. Not only stop-start is driven by CAFE standards, but also there's also a huge emission benefit which not many people care for, but one can argue that emission is harder to catch up than CAFE CO2 because at least you can buy CO2 credits from other OEM's while emissions is something you need to make up for one way or another. Ironically, the most effective way to reduce emission is dump a lot of fuel in the cold start to minimize incomplete combustion, so it actually hurts fuel economy. There should not be a way to permanently disable start-stop because it is against EPA's rules. BMW was the only OEM up until 2018 to have the option to permanently disable, but in order to do that, they were forced to submit another fuel economy test with stop-start disabled and have a label that was the average between a test with S/S and without S/S. Ever since 2019, BMW joined the rest of the OEMs to enable S/S at every key cycle because it is just too costly to have this feature for only half-credit and gaining that extra 1 mpg gain on the city is too much to refuse. Customers hate it, and yes, it will likely shorten your overall 12V battery life, but welcome to the era of regulations.

  21. What I think is really happening here since it doesn't really make much sense to make medical supplies in an automotive facility for sterilization reasons is that companies like 3M are coming to companies like Ford/GM/FCA and leaning on them for their engineering expertise and ability to design production systems in a hurry. If they’re able to make them in house somehow (like Ford is doing with face shields at the moment) then even better.

  22. I'm just a pimple on the Tool & Die butt, but I found it interesting that already yesterday I had a request on my desk for a component to be used in a new injection mold for a "ventilator" part. Tooling to be built by a moldmaker, request from one of the Auto manufacturers, end user one of the major Medical equipment suppliers. HRG

  25. This goes to reinforce to me that people don't like change and people are idiots because they feel entitled to having things their way because they don't like change. Lots of bitching about something that actually saves you money. My wife's Escape has stop start and she doesn't even notice it anymore after having it for two years, I drive it (my car doesn't have it) and I barely notice it.
