Comparo: Focus vs. Cruze

Recommended Posts

The bad news: The 2011 Chevy Cruze got whupped by the 2012 Ford Focus, 87.5 points to 77.7. Why? Maybe it's because Ford has its sights set on world dominance, while Chevy seems satisfied to continue being better than itself rather than its competitors. Yes, the Cruze is superior to the Cobalt it replaces, just as the Cobalt was vastly improved over the Cavalier. But that strategy shows only progress rather than leadership.

Another homerun for Ford brand to go along with new Explorer, freshened Edge, Escape, Fiesta, and Fusion. Now if Ford can bring the new EB I4 out in timely manner to Edge and Explorer as gas prices continue to spike. I hope the Edge EB I4 and Explorer can get 20% gas mileage than 3.5L V6.

This is what happens when you compare a 2 or 3 year old car with a brand new one. The Cruze is new to us, but it's been on sale globally since MY2009. The Focus is truly new and it shows with a dominant victory.

Do you honestly think that a brand new, freshly designed Cruze would have compared much better?

No it wouldn't. In fact, when Cruze came out two/three years ago, Comparos from EU all said then fresh Cruze was not as good as the not so fresh C1 Focus.

Case closed.

IMO, Cruze is not Focus' biggest problem, it's the growing popularity of Fiesta.

A lot of those previous entry level Focus sales are now being picked up by Fiesta.

I don't really see that as a "problem" though. Fiesta is really only going to be taking away, in any significant number, the lower end of the Focus market, where the Focus really shouldn't be playing anymore anyway. Higher ATP's and wide utilization of the shared C-platform in other vehicles make it a no-brainer for profits even if it loses a chunk of sales to Fiesta. The Fiesta will likely have a harder time recovering costs than the Focus anyway, so any additional sales it can muster will probably help Ford's overall balance sheet more than selling a bunch of stripped Focus S's would.

Mulally (to the Ford universe): You wanna know how to get Chevrolet? They pull a good enough, you pull a spectacular.

They send the people a Cruze, you send the people a Focus.

*That's* the *FORD* way! And that's how you get Chevrolet.

Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? I'm offering you a deal. Do you want this deal?

Now on to Lincoln.

Wow, .91G on the skidpad w/Titanium Handling Package. The Fusion Sport does .79G, hell my "sports car" 1997 SVT Mustang Cobra does .89G. The new Mustang GT is .94G. Gives some perspective, we have come a long way.

Also, when I bought my Fusion Sport the first thing I noticed was how quiet it was at highway speed. Look at the dB interior volume numbers below between the two. Exceptional for a 4 cylinder vs. a 6 cylinder, and the Michelin summer tires probably add some noise vs. the all seasons on the Fusion Sport. They have done a great job with soundproofing once again.

2012 Focus 2010 Fusion Sport

Idle 39.5db 45db

Full Throttle 75db 79db

70MPH cruise 66.5db 71db

I have driven both the Cruze and the Fiesta. The Cruze is much, much bigger, smoother and very, very quiet. If the Focus is better than the Cruze, then it would have no problem competing with the Fiesta.

In regards to Fiesta vs. Focus, an example is my sister was interested in trading in 2003 Focus for Fiesta, but she thought it was too small inside. Now is leaning to 2012 Focus, since it gets nearly same mileage.

The Fiesta really fills a gap left when the old Escort was dropped. Fiesta is slightly narrower, though.

The Focus is actually same size as the old Tempo and I think most buyers will come in to look at Fiesta, then sit in Focus and say for about "same MPG, I get more room".

Every review so far states that the Elantra destroys the Cruze, and then they go on to states that the Focus is much better than the Elantra!!

I would have a hard time believing that the Cruze is quieter than the Fiesta, as it is unreal how quiet the Fiesta is. I can understand that the ride from the Cruze is better than the Fiesta because of the size difference, but I doubt it matches the quality of the very solid Fiesta.

It's a great time to be in the market for a C-segment car. :happy feet:

And when the driver wishes to introduce a little more ruckus into the cabin, the 1.6L Sigma engine sounds sweet at higher rpm's! :shades:

andthey also invest in a Steeda Cold Air Intake....little droney under load at low rpms, but hit the sweetspot and a nice little Snarl erupts....
