UAW Demands 46% Pay Hike

Recommended Posts

These morons don't have the slightest idea of how the economy works.  They think if they receive massive pay increases, it'll better their position in life. They don't realize they've essentially costed themselves their careers long term. Mark my words, we're gonna see a shift to brands making even more cars outside the U.S. and shuttering U.S. plants.

That's not even taking into account pay hikes rarely improve someone's life. Ford is just gonna raise the prices of their products considerably, which will have a thousand of tiny effects on the economy, and drive up the cost of living. Meaning these workers won't really be any better off in the long run.

He barely won a runoff election where the members voted directly rather than allowing representatives to vote and based on some comments I’ve seen the turnout was abysmally low - like 11%.

It’s partly because it was a 100 percent mailing system and not everyone has their correct address on file. Had they had every local do an in person ballot turnout would have been much higher

As far as Chicago is concerned, that would probably be one of the plants that needed to do more of that kind of thing given the plant was old and small.  That plant was considered our worst assembly plant for a number of reasons and if there were to be closures the 3 always on the top of the list were Chicago, Flat Rock and Oakville.  (Again, that hit list may look different now....not trying to freak anyone out.  LOL...)

You are right Chicago is old. Some sections still there where Model T was assembled. Had many discussions with VO Engineering regarding "on the bubble" status. Quite a few questioned that Chicago was open and Wixom, in much better condition, was closed. At the time thought it was related to the value of the land. Closed plants were marketable as real estate. Chicago is in an area dotted with long closed factories.

Had one employee who had an address and phone number on file that belonged to his father (a Ford Retiree) he left home in 1971. This was 2015 when I attempted contact.

To say it was close would be an understatement. I Hope this results in members getting their addresses on-file corrected, before the next election.

Ford, UAW Close on Tentative Agreement, Sources Say

https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2023/10/25/uaw-strike-update-ford-tentative-agreement-deal-contract/71316728007/

Ford Motor Co. was close on Wednesday afternoon to a tentative agreement with the UAW on a 2023 union contract, the Detroit Free Press has learned.

Negotiators for Ford and the United Auto Workers had productive talks late Tuesday, said a source not authorized to discuss the matter. That person and another source with knowledge of the negotiations said people involved are hopeful, but the ongoing talks are delicate.

To give an idea of how quickly things can change, Ford was braced for expansion of the labor strike that began Sept. 15 to include a walkout Tuesday at the Dearborn Truck Plant at the Rouge, the sources told the Free Press.

That didn't happen.

A key issue in the talks is reportedly a wage increase over the life of the contract. While the Detroit Three have offered 23%, first proposed by Ford, the UAW is said to want to push to 25% in addition to other benefits related to compensation and time off.

A Ford deal would include cost-of-living pay increases that could lift the total pay raises above 30%, according to confidential sources credited by the Associated Press. In addition, workers would still receive annual profit-sharing checks.

Whitmer: UAW, Detroit Three negotiators should 'be locked in a room' until deal reached

UAW Strike_Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.jpg

Flint — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday suggested United Auto Workers and Detroit Three negotiators should "be locked in a room" until tentative agreements are reached as the union's unprecedented simultaneous strike surpassed the length of its national walkout against General Motors Co. in 2019.

During an event in Flint, the Democratic governor expressed frustration with the length of the strike, which hit 41 days: "I really believe that it's time for all of them to be locked in a room and not to come out until the deal is done."

Ford Reaches Tentative Agreement with the UAW after 41 Days on Strike, Sources Say

https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2023/10/25/uaw-strike-ford-reaches-tentative-deal-with-union-sources-say/71318908007/

Top UAW officials told local union leaders Wednesday night by phone that the union has a potential deal with Ford Motor Co. to end the strike against the automaker, the Detroit Free Press has learned.

Details of the tentative agreement were not immediately available, but negotiators for the United Auto Workers union and Ford had a good meeting on Wednesday and plan to move forward, said sources close to the talks but not authorized to talk with the media.

Any potential deal between the union and the automaker is subject to review by local union leaders from around the country elected by the members, called the UAW National Ford Council, who will travel to Detroit prior to a ratification vote, sources said. First would come a UAW announcement of a tentative agreement.

Any proposed contract must go to members for informational review, and then a vote to ratify or reject the deal. Ford represents an estimated 57,000 hourly employees represented by the UAW, the largest employer of U.S. union workers in the auto industry.

A key issue in the talks is reportedly a wage increase over the life of the contract. While the Detroit Three automakers have offered 23%, first proposed by Ford, the UAW is said to have pushed for 25%, in addition to other benefits related to compensation and time off.

A Ford deal would include cost-of-living pay increases that could lift the total pay raises above 30%, according to confidential sources credited by the Associated Press. In addition, workers would still receive annual profit-sharing checks.

A tentative agreement comes after a 41-day strike against Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. The strike would continue against General Motors and Stellantis, as those companies and the UAW had yet to reach an agreement on a new contract.

The UAW has not addressed whether striking would stop at Ford facilities prior to a ratification vote.

In recent weeks, the UAW has had members ratify a contract with General Dynamics while rejecting a tentative agreement with Mack Trucks.

In 2019, the UAW went on a 40-day strike against GM and announced ratification with a 57% to 43% vote on Oct. 25, 2019. The contract representing some 46,000 workers was decided by 23,389 "yes" votes and 17,501 "no" votes.

Full details should be available Sunday evening after the Ford council voted on whether or not to bring it to the membership has always struck me as a formality.

Strike ends today to keep pressure on GM and Stellantis. Everyone on strike now is considered to be on TLO until return to work process is worked out.

Some of the idiots here are already asking to have their "no" votes counted now... haven't even seen the details but they'll still vote no. These people piss me off!

Big difference in the reaction on the MAP Facebook groups I’m in vs the post on the UAW International page. There’s 1 guy in particular I know is going to be very, VERY bitter for the next 4 years if this passes.

Maybe this will be the impetus he needs to find a different employer that he'll be happier at,,,,,,
