BMW Neue Klass Coupe spotted testing

Recommended Posts

Does this thing give anyone else modern day probe vibes? Or maybe that funky looking Subaru made in the late 90s/early 2000s? If Ford made an EV coupe/liftback that looked kinda like this based on CE1, I'd be all over it. They'd sell tens of them, and like 5 would be to me.

That rear quarter kills it for me.

It definitely needs some time to get used to. It might not even look like that once the camo comes off. But it's giving me 80s vibes with that almost squared off look modernized for a new era.

I always remember something Jack Telnack said about car styling.  A new design should, at first, make you feel uncomfortable.  That's when the designer knows he went far enough.

Yes, absolutely.

True, you always want to be moving the envelope forward. We'll have to wait and see if they moved it forward in a good, or bad way soon enough. I will say I've soured on the rear end a little bit over these last few days, but fingers crossed the final product still managed to look appealing.

BMW has not set the world on fire with their designs lately.   This appears to be no exception.

The thing I find kinda interesting is there is no outcry like years back with the Bangle butt and other things, which to means to me that the market isn't lusting after BMWs like it once did before.

We've had some fun mocking the Neue Klass for its almost retro look, but you can only do so much with aero design and still have a practical machine. I don't think aero uber all results in a good design direction for an automobile. Even commercial aircraft have run up against this; Cx can only be reduced by tiny amounts now.  Other than having four engines, there's very little visual difference between a 1959 Boeing 707-320 and a 2018 Airbus A220-300:

I am on several BMW forums and the general consensus is that they went backwards with the latest 5 series.   There was a lot of criticism of the 3 and 4 series nose but I think people are getting more comfortable with that.    My favorite BMW is the 8 series.     I agree that the market doesn't lust after BMWs anymore.   The BMW purists think they have gone too soft and no longer deserving to be referred to as the ultimate driving machine.

8 Series:   My favorite design but they will probably drop it.

I'll agree about the new 5 - I'm seeing more of them around, and I don't love the new styling.

Eh, I've driven new M135is, M3s and M4s on the track, and what they can do is pretty incredible.

My guess is as technology has advanced they’ve gotten easier and more comfortable to drive even though they’re actually faster.  Some people don’t like that.

The new 5 Series looks like a Honda. A bit too tall as well.
