New Ford Capri

Recommended Posts

I like the lights, but based on what we saw with the prototype, I'm really not digging the overall shape. It looks quite awkward and I'll proportioned to my eye. But hopefully it grows on me. I think part of the issue is the lights are rounded, but the overall shape looks to be quite boxy, so it just doesn't look very cohesive.

Meh? Its not terrible, but I don't find it particularly attractive or wanting one (if I could get it)

This kinda reminds me of the Mach E-a two door made into a four door and it going over like a fart in church with Capri purists. At least IMO the Mach E looks more like a Mustang then the Explorer EV made into a sedan to look like a 2 door Capri. The whole hipline sits too high for what is supposed to be a "sporty" car.

You are seeing the design direction the next gen Mach E will look like

Highly doubt it. The second gen mach-e design, if we get one at all, will probably be used as a test bed for futuristic mustang styling cues that will then be tweaked and applied to s750, which if I had to guess, it's probably in advanced design studios at best.

S550 inspired the mach-e, mach-e inspired the s650, the s650 inspired the mach-e refresh. I expect that back and forth to continue. If ford's smart, they lean even harder into the '67-68 fastback theme maybe with a bit of exotic flair.

I don't like its styling; in fact, I don't like any of these so called coupé "SUVs".

I much prefer the looks of the Explorer EV. Unfortunately, I just saw some very negative reviews.

Ford of Europe seems to be in a bad place - and this comment is coming from South America, where they might just rename "Ford do Brasil" to "Ranger de Argentina".

It honestly looks like "generic video game" car.

I’m left with the same feelings as you, if Ford has gone for “vanilla” then they nailed it in spades.

Is this better than the ID4 and if so, could it draw VW buyers away from the mother ship?

For near on £50,000, it will need to be crazy good.

I don't know what to say anymore.
The Capri was Europe's Mustang, both on the road and the track...

Then returns as a VW-based SUV coupe.

For those outside North America, particularly in Europe, this is like killing the Mustang and reviving the iconic name only as Mach E but on a less impressive platform developed by a rival brand.

The Mercury (US) Capri name was first used for the top Lincoln model above the Cosmopolitan. It was available in 2dr hardtop coupe, 4dr sedan and a very handsome convertible:

Yes the "Capri" name was recycled many times before.

Outside North America, the European Capri coupe (1969-1986) was an icon.

In America, the European Capri was probably just a small imported Ford sold by Mercury.

Correct, I knew a guy in high school whose dad had a 70s "Mercury" Capri.  He loved it and raved and ranted about it all the time.  I always thought it was odd he called it a Mercury Capri when there were no Mercury badges on it anywhere.

In terms of mechanicals, customers will have two configurations to choose from at launch – a rear-wheel drive model that churns out 286 PS (282 horsepower) and delivers up to 627 kilometers (390 miles) of range on the European WLTP cycle, or an all-wheel drive example with 340 PS (335 horsepower) and 592 kilometers of range (368 miles). The base model can do 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds and charge from 10-80 percent in 28 minutes using a 135 kW DC fast charger, while the latter does 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds and can add the same amount of charge in 26 minutes using a 185 kW DC fast charger.

The best part of the reveal, seeing the design sketches. I like those sketches, but they show just how important stance and proportions are. If it actually looked like this, I'd like it a lot more. The longer hood, the sportier stance, etc.

Also, can someone who followed the inside development of this car tell me why some of the design sketches are clearly showing a sedan/hatch? Are those older sketches for past generations used as inspiration, or was Ford actually considering reviving this as a car at some point?
