J-150
2 basket cases merging equals a much larger basket case. Renault-Nissan worked because Ghosn was a dictator that forced the different cultures to work. FCA the same with Marchionne as dictator. Neither side has a dictator waiting to direct 4 different cultures.

That’s what people said about Fiat & Chrysler 7 minutes ago, J-150 said: Renault-Nissan worked because Ghosn was a dictator that forced the different cultures to work. Nissan is not part of this proposed merger. They are only 44% owned by Renault. FCA and Renault have moved ahead without Nissan, the French automaker’s 20-year partner, which has resisted proposals by Renault to merge in a holding-company structure. J-150
Unless they sell that 44% stake, Nissan is involved. and yes FCA is still a basket case. Take out Jeep and Ram cash and what do you have? Same with Ford minis F-Series. Big money makers covering up the losers. Edited May 27, 2019 by J-
Trailhiker
I wonder if this would mean that FCA would not have to buy nearly as many CAFE credits. That alone would be a big deal for them.
rperez817
Good article at Bloomberg about the behind the scenes activities for this proposal, code named "Newton". https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-05-28/marchionne-s-spirit-looms-in-merger-plan-his-disciple-drove-home A few hours after revealing a combination that stands to reshuffle the global automotive industry, John Elkann appeared at Bocconi University in Milan to tout the virtues of a merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and France’s Renault SA. It’s a familiar venue and a familiar line for the leader of Italy’s preeminent industrial dynasty. A decade earlier in January 2009, Elkann had stood in the same place to announce Fiat’s takeover of Chrysler. And like last time, the underlying motivation is the same -- to build scale that helps insulate carmakers against the shocks raining down on the industry. The types of impacts, however, are new: electrification, autonomous driving, a new breed of drivers questioning the need to own a car, and rivals that a decade ago hardly existed, like Alphabet Inc.’s Waymoor Tesla Inc. But now as then, the urge is to make an audacious bet or risk being swept away by the wave of change, Elkann said.
mackinaw
Better article in today's Autoline Daily. It sounds like FCA is giving away the shop. Listen to the first two minutes. http://www.autoline.tv/journal/?p=61998
rperez817
Preliminary approval by Renault is expected next week. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-05-28/renault-poised-to-give-nod-to-fiat-merger-as-soon-as-next-week
630land
I think this is going to happen, since all parties want to save $$$ in long run. Can do it without NIssan's approval. But there will be cuts, and no more Chrysler brand, it's been on life support since the 200 [meant to compete with Asian cars] got killed. The Minivan can be branded as Ram. 300 is dying off. Dodge? Who the f knows? But for sure, Plymouth and Desoto are never "coming back".

Gurgeh
All you folks are including a "C" in the new acronym. Anyone think that the Chrysler make will continue? How about "Fiajeren"? Sounds like something that would appear in a prescription drug commercial. You know, the kind with minor side affects like dry mouth, depression, erectile dysfunction, and death... It could be good for FCA globally but not for America. But we'll see how it comes out.
