Rick73
12 hours ago, akirby said: So without reciprocal tariffs what leverage do we have to get other countries to give us a more fair trade agreement? Without leverage there is no negotiating. And tariffs hit them in their pocketbooks which is most effective. The other countries won’t let it go that far. They’ve already asked to negotiate and promised concessions. The only one that is in any danger of a prolonged battle is China and that’s a completely separate and far more complicated issue. Bloomberg reports China raised tariffs and won’t go higher because they think it’s already a numbers “joke” in that there will essentially be no trade anyway so why bother making them even higher? As I suggested it’s effectively an embargo for all practical purposes and they know it. China is indeed a complicated issue that started at least 40 years ago IIRC and it’s not getting solved overnight.
jpd80
Edit, never mind. As an Aussie, I shouldn’t get too upset because we have free trade agreements with most countries. Navarro has a bee in his bonnet about two things Australia does: 1. excludes US beef - we grow enough of our own and export heaps. 2. our pharmaceutical benefits system allows us to seek out and buy cheaper generics that are subsidised to people with serious conditions. Life saving medications are made affordable for sufferers but Peter Navarro says he doesn’t like that Edited April 11 by jpd80

Its all coming from Peter Navarro, he’s convinced the president and others that the US can replace taxation with tariffs which means basically a consumption tax on the things you buy that are imports. The tariff on China now mean it’s effectively an embargo on those goods, are people going to pay those massive tariffs until replacement products come from friendly countries or made in USA? There will need to be negotiation because change can’t and won’t happen overnight. Australia is pissed, you guys have a surplus with us and yet we get a 10% tariff? Theres now calls to cancel the AUKUS submarine deal in retaliation, I hope that doesn’t happen. Point is you don’t treat allies in such a shitty way. Agreed. Honestly, it’s going to be interesting to see how trade will be after the smoke clears. It’s possible that some trading relationships will change because of all the recent tariff rubbish.

China Allows New Coal Plants, but With More Limited Role Quote China will allow the construction of new coal power plants through at least 2027 but with restrictions aimed at limiting emissions and boosting renewables, according to a newly released action plan. The plan clears the way to build new plants where needed to shore up the supply of power or to balance solar and wind, Bloomberg reports. To that end, new coal plants must be able to ramp up and ramp down quickly. The plan also directs new plants to burn coal more efficiently than the existing fleet, and it will require some new power stations to run less than 20 percent of the time. Just saying..... They definitely shouldn't be considered a "3rd world country" at this point.

Musk is not the only Republican that has disagreed with Navarro, or his extreme and confrontational approach on tariffs. Musk has just been more open and vocal about it. Fortunately, IMO, there have been many really smart and experienced people working hard to keep the wheels from coming off the US economy thus far. My concern is that even if cooler heads prevail long term, some of the damage done already will not be reversible; at least for a very long time.
