FordBuyer
Bill Brown Ford received a 2009 Focus SEL today with everything on it including Moon and Tune and ESC. The sticker price was a tad over $21,000 which is rather shocking price for a Focus IMO. Right next to it was 2009 Fusion SE with Sports Appearance Package and Sync for $22,000. I was afraid of that when I heard Ford was doing SEL Focus. The previous highest price I have even seen on 2008 Focus was $19,900 sticker. I'm afriad many will shy away from $20,000+ SEL Focuses. If Ford does sell a lot of them, Ford should be able to make decent profit on 2009 Focus. This SEL Focus had the 2008 wheels on it that are straight angled lines, not the goofy curved lines the 2008 SES Focus had. It didn't have the new wheels that some have at Wayne Assembly lot. I assume they go on the sporty SES version. Haven't seen the SES yet on Dealer lot.
ANTAUS
Not sure which article I read, but supposedly Ford is making an average $750 per unit profit on each Focus sold...in this regard, I guess it's that, then some, and some more.... Most car brands have that initial overlap from one another, from one size class to another. Maybe you and I wont pay for it, but many others who don't know or care. EDITx3 - went ape poop with the options. added just about everything i could short of the car cover and got it way over 28K. for a Civic. hmm... wonder what i can get an Si over.... CMON $30K Civic!!! EDITx4 of a boring night..... just $67 short of 30K for a Civic Si Sedan with EVERYTHING they offer for it. body kit, 18" wheels, muffler, floor and trunk mats, and the whole shebang. the car cover puishes it over, but thats not really fair. 630land
Welcome to the nearly 2010's! People want all the toys and then expect 1991 prices. Just like when loaded 1990's Escorts crossed $10K, people complained, but got to realize inflation still exists. The current compact cars are far from the 1980's/90s tinny boxes. NickF1011
I would expect these prices to become a lot more commonplace on the Focus once the Fiesta comes in and the new Focus shows up. In other words....get used to it. The Focus isn't going to be a bargain basement car anymore.

I know another poster on this site that ordered an almost identical car. My sticker price (which can be found in the VIN tracking forum) is 21,020. Obviously, I'm not paying that for it. I didn't want a Fusion. I think that from now on you are going to see more people like me buying small, economical cars without giving up luxury features of bigger cars. The sticker on my Focus SEL is $21,530. Like nickz, I did not want a Fusion; I wanted a small car to commute with that had the luxuries my other vehicles have (sunroof, leather, remote start, SYNC, etc.). I agree in that we are going to continue seeing this if gas stays high. Small car prices will do exactly what SUV prices did between 1995-2004; rise, rise, rise. Our car market will start to look more and more like Europe's, having small cars that have articulating headlamps, navigation, etc.
ANTAUS
I too will be expecting quality, over quantity in relation to pricing. IN other words, just as in Europe... we'll have fully optioned Focus' with equipment and luxury touches that would rival some luxury vehicles. Smaller size won't necessarily mean a smaller price tag. The new leather, heated seats on the Focus SEL have the nice, contrasting stitching of the Fusion. Also, wait until you see the 4 door Focus with the new wheels from the 2009 Focus Coupe. Very sharp looking and doesn't look like an economy car, that's for sure. Add in auto dimming mirror, message center, adjustable rear seat restraints, ESC, moon and tune, and you have one, nice ride that befits any well appointed vehicle plus excellent fuel mileage. Alex D.
$21,000 really isn't that bad for a car in this class considering all of the goodies you get. Heck my 2005 ZX4 SES stickered at $19,995 and that wasn't even fully loaded. My 2008 SES sedan was equipped similarly to my '05 minus leather and the '08 stickered just a hair over $20K and has a lot more features like sync, TPMS, auto dim mirror, side curtain air bags and Sirius and was only $300 more than my '05. It's nice to be able to drive a small, economical vehicle without sacrificing the luxuries of their larger stable mates .
ironhorse
I have 2 retail orders for loaded SEL Focus'. Both customers are late 50's and large disposeable incomes...they want a small car that gets 30+ MPG with all the buttons...my product mix for stock has moved higher end with more options this year. focus05
The dealers around here only sell well-equipped Focus sedans. The coupes are barely selling - and only with a lot of features. The "S" models are just sitting on the lots. There are about 100 Focii in the area and about 70 are S or SE's without SYNC. The other 30 are mostly coupes. I'd read that people are demanding higher-level trims on lower-level cars, and they're willing to pay for them. Perhaps the Cimarron was too far ahead of its time? V8 Ford
Perhaps the Cimarron was too far ahead of its time? At least with the focus, even with the economy interior, there's a decent car underneath it all
BORG
This is why Euro-spec economy cars may now work for Ford in the USA. Keep your fingers crossed that gas prices stay high!
FordBuyer
This is why Euro-spec economy cars may now work for Ford in the USA. Keep your fingers crossed that gas prices stay high! Spiking gas prices every Summer is an annual event in America, isn't it? It's always something that causes gas prices to spike a little higher every summer. Couple that with new CAFE Rules, and there is no turning back for anyone. I think the trick will be to create a roomy vehicle that Americans love with excellent fuel economy. If the new Focus uses the Kuga's floorpan and wheelbase ,it should be as wide as the Fusion and very roomy indeed!!!

Gas prices go up during the summer time, which leads to large losses at the gas stations, but when prices goes down in the second half gas stations make money as the price goes down they profit from the margin. I'm sure some are saying the bubble has popped, but really its a cyclical part of the gas price cycle, and will rise about this year's peak next year. I think you'll see a pretty big shift over the next few years as to what Ford will consider a "stripper" model though. I would bet a base model Focus in the next generation is going to be a lot more feature-rich than the current one, as they will no longer have to occupy the bottom rung of the pricing ladder due to Fiesta's availability. Edstock
I wish that high-end Focus models had an available 6-speed automatic. The next Focus will, IIRC.
