AutoNews Ford Roadmap for the next few years

Recommended Posts

The article mentions that the Fiesta maybe discontinued for North America and replaced with a larger subcompact.

If that happens does that mean no more Fiesta ST for North America?

That would seem like a strange move to me after all the work they did to consolidate everything. I could see Fiesta growing a bit to give it more competitive rear legroom/space, but I don't see them dropping Fiesta here.

Can you elaborate on the Ranger thing? Or is that discussed in another thread? I'd be interested in the big picture thoughts on what that may be.

Just hearing rumors about what Ford wants to put in MAP. Nothing solid will be known until after contract negotiations.

I think there is generally a consensus that traditional European B-segment cars are too small for US market (and many emerging markets). For example, Nissan sells Versa in US but March in EU. Hyundai sells Accent in the US but i20 in EU. VW has a whole suite of cars based on the "B+" dimension - VW Santana and Jetta (China), Skoda Rapid, and SEAT Toledo that are aimed mainly at emerging markets.

If Ford is thinking about the market segments critically, I think they may go with the same playbook... a cheaper but bigger B+ car (most importantly, a sedan that doesn't look like an aborted fetus) for US and emerging markets, and a proper B car for EU.

biker. 8 month order turnaround and complete inability to be tracked through Fords vin visibility. And then to be held hostage at the port by CVR not to mention a substandard trucking company.....That even one ups a trifecta.

That doesn't sound pleasant at all.

I wonder why this is happening?

a consequence of overseas manufacturing? Spain in particular?...bad infrastructure? lack of organizational skills?....all four?....mind-blowingly frustrating I can attest...that said though...full size transit is every bit as bad with a higher demand rate...and they are made here...so THAT situation could be viewed as even LESS excusable.

strictly-imhO, MKII,

it's all part of the coming architecture change-over

( I expect MANY misleading hints/rumors/farticles beforehand )

But by then (2018my and later) this FiST would be retiring anyway

Would the Chinese Escort maybe be a new entry level B+ car? Similar to the Versa? But also, b car sales may be hurt by good used cars available. Someone with low budget may go looking at a new Fiesta and drive out with a used Focus/Fusion/Escape. "For a the same $$ we can put you in a bigger car!"

And Focus is getting a re-design, so no need to have panic attacks, as some were a few weeks ago.

I believe the Escort is the same size if not a tad larger than the Focus, no? Or am I wrong with that?

Chinese Escort is LWB Focus (first gen C1)

I know what you're getting at but think back to the narrower C170 Focus, it was a true compact

but today's Focus is closer to an original Mid sized car but stuck with a small capacity trunk.

.

On a new platform, the B and C cars could be similar length/wheelbase but different widths.

That would make for interesting times with both the Utility and commercial variants

Other manufacturers export all the time.

I think its a Ford issue.

This reminds me of JPD's issue with getting product to Australia from Europe.

I am sure this will attract Dick, but my suspciion is there is little incentive for Ford business units to export product if demand is high in their home territories.

I wonder if the Fiesta replacement could be a subcompact CUV instead of a sedan/hatch.

That makes too much sense.

I think it is obvious that the main growth area in the B-segment is CUV so I would be extremely surprised if Ford doesn't have something in that space by 2017.

It's not an either/or situation with the CUV. Ford will have a CUV and a sedan/hatch here. But the question is whether a global Fiesta will continue to be sold here or we get the emerging market cheap sedan/hatch instead.

I don't think Ford is going to try and out do the Koreans in this market...there really isn't anything wrong with the Fiesta IMO...just that class of car isn't really that popular in the US at least. It sells decently and if they are making $$$ on it, what is the big deal? The only cars that are selling better then it are the Sonic and Versa, which are both known to be as lost leaders for subprime customers

Accent and Rio combined also outsell Fiesta. Also, don't forget about Soul, which towers over everyone.

And I'm going to bet that the new Mexican Honda Fit will outsell Fiesta in a 12-months period, too.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Fiesta either but if Ford is going to design a 2nd B-car (I'm calling it B+ because I'm assuming it will be similar in size to Versa, Accent, Soul, Fit etc) then I think it is a better product for the US market than Fiesta.

2 years for a mustang refresh seems short, and 4 years seems really short for a mustang redesign.

Everything else seems right in line with current rumor/speculation that's been out there for the past year or so.

I know the sales numbers are good right now but the fact of the matter is that there have been a lot of misgivings expressed about the look of the new Mustang, particularly with respect to the front end. It's widely discussed on a lot of the Mustang forums with the exception of Mustang 6G where they absolutely do not tolerate anything but praise for the car lol. At any rate, I'm not surprised that Ford is looking to change the look of the car and especially the front end because it has been a source of criticism from a lot of Mustang fans and owners, myself included. I have owned three Mustangs but I wouldn't buy the current model because to me the front end just looks like a whale shark. It is not attractive at all. I've even driven the car in both ecoboost and V6 configurations and there is no doubt that it drives nice, handles great, has great feature content and yet despite all that I would have no interest in buying one because the front end is just so ridiculous.

Here's what I'd like to see as the redesigned C-Max. Raise it slightly, install a newly designed, higher capacity HVB that fits under the car, flat cargo area and call it what ever they like. Despite being a wagon, because it's a PHEV and Hybrid, I think it would sell as well as, or better than the current design. That's of course if Ford tried to sell it by advertising it.

You realize of course, you’re expressing your own personal opinion which matters only to one person, you.

Mustang sales are up 51.1% YTD. It’s clear the latest version of the car is an out-of-the-park home run.

To each his own, but the new front end looks 100 times better to me than the previous one.

I bet every model of mustang ever made has critics who don't like something about it. For every person who doesn't like the new nose there may be 3 that do.

You can never please everybody.

I realize that, and I realize its the same thing that everyone else around here does. I also realize that I am not the only person who shares that opinion because I've read the numerous posts regarding the matter. I think it might be obvious that Ford realizes it too or they wouldn't be changing the front end so soon.

That much is certain. I remember the uproar over the SN95 when it came out.

Thanks.

And FYI, if that is in fact 2018CY, it'll be pretty much right on schedule w/past fascia updates.
