Ford Sales January 2025 - Down 6.3% Overall

Recommended Posts

Not very many bright spots on there.

Bronco was up, as was Mach E.  F-series up 20.4%.  Nautilus up too.

I'd imagine Expedition and Navigator are suffering from model changeover right now.

Otherwise, most everything was down - Mustang's numbers continue to drop by 1/3....

Looks like most of the losses where due the 2025 Maverick going into production and the Mustang still having issues?

Mostly Edge being discontinued - that was $7k out of the $10k drop.  Maverick and Explorer were the other big ones.  Mustang was a big percentage but small numbers,

Yeah, Edge, Explorer, and Maverick.  On the other hand Ranger did well which is good to see.  I keep wondering how much of Maverick decline is due to controversial new front end that many don’t like.  The previous front end looked far better to me.

IMO that was the weakest part of the Maverick, i prefer the 2025 front end better.

Maverick had a shipping hold after the new version went into production, can't sell what you don't ship. Plus the MY24 XL's & XLT's are STILL under a stop sale due to the reverse camera issue.  I'm surprised they found 8K Lariats to sell,,,,,

I hope that’s all it is.  From aesthetics point of view, the addition of what appears like two small snow plows under the headlights look completely out of place to me; like they were just stuck on there to fill a gap.  It’s very polarizing from what I’ve read.  Other than that the AWD Hybrid with 4,000-pound tow rating and also flat towable is promising.

The big drop in Explorer is concerning. Hyundai Palisades came out after the current Explorer and there is already a new gen which will be on sale in a few months time. The speed at which competitors are moving in this segment really reminds me of the final decade of Taurus when Ford just couldn't keep up and can only chase fleet sales.

I have yet to even see a new '25 Maverick, so I don't think it's related to styling - I don't think they're at dealers yet.

I don't think it's anywhere near that dire, but Ford definitely needs to get its act together and have more regular/consistent refreshes and redesigns, especially on important products.

The Palisades and Telluride where extremely popular in my area when they first came out and now I struggle to see them. The refreshed models went backwards in the looks dept IMO

Agreed. The original Palisade was inoffensive. The Telluride was handsome. Both got beat with an ugly stick.

I think that we would need to see the monthly estimates from the other mfr's to see if there was a widespread decline. There was some tough weather across the country in January, which likely depressed sales. Compounding that, I think that in the Explorer's case, it's a combination  product mix and option structure that may be contributing to a steep decline. I only have empirical data on one sale, mine, but our dealer had no ST-Lines with the standard  35-30-35 2nd row, and none could be located within a reasonable distance. We ordered a Rapid red ST-Line with the std. 2nd row seat. We have a build date of 3/3, so March or April sales will be +1, lol. Other nitpicks is that Rapid Red is not available on the Active, and other brands have wireless charging and integrated cornering lamps standard or optional on lower or mid-level trims.

Dealer integrity is important to us, so that was a major reason that we bought our fifth new Ford from this dealer, and nosing ahead of a Mazda CX9.

Thanks for posting this - the link I found didn't have the inventory numbers with it.

HK and Kia especially now have by far the worst wheel designs of anyone - all the new wheels look terrible.

  • Sherminator98 changed the title to Ford Sales January 2025 - Down 6.3% Overall

Something to consider regarding Ford’s January sales is current inventory levels.

Some examples

Escape ……………46,000

Bronco Sport……35,900

Bronco…………….43,000

Explorer…………..40,600

Maverick………….42,900. (Hearing there’s a Hold?)

Transit Van………43,900

Ranger…………….16,000

F Series…….….230,000

Given the abundance of the above vehicles, it looks like buyer resistance is a genuine thing

but hard to figure if it’s just price or whether buyers seek 25YM vs 24YM - I’ll leave that to

observations by our local contributors.

Most of the big % changes can be explained. Bronco has the 25’s coming out and the 24’s have some good discounts on them. The Mach e had some pretty big rebates. Maverick has supply issues. Ranger had supply issues last year. The only two I can’t really figure out are the explorer and transit. Explorer just had a refresh with a much improved interior. Whats its issue? Transit with a 45% drop, what’s the deal there?

I still personally believe the Explorer’s lack of substantial change is a compounding factor. The 25 should’ve been an all new model not a midcycle refresh. It’s one of the reasons I’m not buying one.

Maybe production pause and/or new models are trickling into dealers?  Only thing I can think of.

That was my point in one of the posts either on this thread or another (can't remember which) - Ford slams the brakes on plans and then leaves major gaps in product cadence, and then pushes their refresh into what should be a redesign timeline.  If they followed the 3/6 refresh/redesign timeline, the refresh should've happened for '23 or '24 at the latest, with a new model being for '26 or '27 (granting an additional year because of covid), but for some reason, they keep going long on Explorer redesigns, and I think they've been lucky with sales remaining stable.

Great to hear.  Expect the AWD Hybrid with 4,000-pound tow package will be a big seller.  Just adding AWD option to Hybrid should help sales IMO.  For what it’s worth, the newest 2025 FORD RV & TRAILER TOWING GUIDE shows the AWD Hybrid as 4-wheel-down towable behind motorhomes, which might help some too.
