RichardJensen
That is true if you ignore the length and height of the two cars. 1965 Mustang: L 181.6" H 51.2" W 68.2" 2011 Mustang: L 188.1" H 55.8" W 73.9" (excluding mirrors). It should be noted that I didn't see ground clearance listed for either model. I believe, not necessarily a fact, that the body of the current car sits closer to the ground. If so, the height of the current Mustang body (not the total vehicle height) is more than 4.6" taller than the body of the 1965 Mustang. Either way, the current Mustang takes up a significantly greater volume than the 1965 Mustang. My mistake. I was thinking of the '67. Here's the specs on the '67: Length 183.6" width 70.9";height: hardtop 51.6", fastback 51.8", convertible 51.6"; wheelbase 108"\ Today's Mustang is a whopping 2.5% longer, 4.1% wider and 7.7% taller than the '67. Please, let's not overstate the size difference between these models. Edited June 8, 2011 by RichardJensen
RichardJensen
FWIW: Comparison of the '67 911 with the '2011: '67: 164" x 63.4" x 52" (l w h) '11: 175" x 73" x 51" So, again, let's not be complaining about the Mustang being all bloated, okay? 2b2
...and I was like WOW, they didn't even try to change the Giugiaro concept (at least from the front) - I suppose it did result in one of their best chops, but I liked that concept except the rear. Did you ever see the Giugiaro in person, Rmc? though I won't argue for the rear design being that appropriate for the Mustang DNA, it was beautiful imho

atvman
Frankly, I enjoyed the Giugaro concept. I would love to see Top Gear UK do the review of this Mustang if it's like their review of the Ford ASBO (Focus ST)! The trio seems to like Ford, but I'm not sure how they'll handle one designed in the States. Though Clarkson did buy a GT and Hammond has at least one classic Mustang. TBirdStangSkyliner
Worldcarfans.com is now reporting the same basic story. They are 100 times more reliable than Autoexpress. This could be the hugest Ford product news in a long time. This platform should be useable for the MKR, Australian Falcon and maybe some other stuff like a Thunderbird, Cougar, Capri or a Galaxie/Fairlane. Oh, to dream. blksn8k2
At first I thought I was looking at a Camaro. My thoughts exactly. Other than the slope of the rear window (or is it just the C pillar treatment?) the overall shape looks suspiciously like the current "still-born hippopotamus". Must be the NASCAR template influence. The GM fanboys should be having a field day with this one.
TomServo92
The GM fanboys should be having a field day with this one. Why? Because some British car rag photoshopped an old Mustang concept?
blksn8k2
Why? Because some British car rag photoshopped an old Mustang concept? Regardless of how realistic it is the very fact that it showed up on websites like BON will be reason enough.
Havelock
my thoughts exactly...however i will extend this tid bit...I WAS told, albeit quite a while ago, to NOT be surprized if the "new" Mustang looked somewhat familiar to the Giugaro concept.....if THIS is anything to go by, my reliable source was correct..... I imagine you were told this info before the unveiling of the 2010 Mustang as the Giugaro was said to allude to the then new, now current, design. Based on everything I've heard, the new mustang will be much more modern. I haven't seen anything to confirm or refute those rumors.

That concept has been around for years and should be well known to the GM crowd.
SVT_MAN
To coincide with the muscle car's 50th anniversary in 2014, Ford will launch it across the world, and in right-hand drive for the first time. This isn't even true. Australia got right-hand drive SVT Cobras back in the 90s!
Hugh
The trio seems to like Ford, but I'm not sure how they'll handle one designed in the States. Though Clarkson did buy a GT and Hammond has at least one classic Mustang. J.C. had two GT's The 1st had the first run drive shaft(?) problem and he was teased about the fuel consumption in a comparison test but he loved it so much he bought another one. Hamster drove the same model in 'Bullet' as his own and they all drove more modern variants (Shelby GT 500?) and they went on about brake horsepower, live axles and lack of refinement yet prefered the 'old school' Boss or whatever. I just love the show and don't take the reviews seriously it's fun entertainment (car porn). Back to topic:

I recall J Mays interview that the Mustang would change and be more modern but it will not be mistaken as anything but a Mustang. That's my interpretation not an actual quote. RichardJensen
Worldcarfans.com is now reporting the same basic story. The kernel of this story (that Ford requested Mustang proposals from all around the Ford empire) was reported some time ago. The conclusion that the next Mustang would be sold globally was easily reached. The issue I have with AutoExpress is all the AutoExpress-i-ness of the article. The barely disguised Giugiaro design, the breathless suggestion that this information was hand delivered by a courier who was nearly gunned down in transit only to become seriously ill when his crumpet was poisoned by a covert (and irresistibly attractive) double agent. The specific dates, times, places that are probably not set at Ford. All that I object to. All the stuff that takes this from being a single paragraph consisting of one bit of insider info and one reasonable conclusion and turns it into something that Albert Broccoli's ghost would option out into a summer blockbuster. 7Mary3
I hope it doesn't end up looking like that. Way too much like a new Camaro! Styling wise, it would be the fall of '73 all over again. Anyways, the new powertrains and IFS sound real good! Jensen is right, the current Mustangs are very close in size to the '64. And the weight is substantially lower than the competition as well.
2b2
I don't believe I did - I mainly didn't like the taillights on the thing. imho they're gorgeous - just not real Mustang-y - even if they are 'triples' looked more like an AstonMartin (or other highend car ) wearing a Mustang disguise
jpd80
This isn't even true. Australia got right-hand drive SVT Cobras back in the 90s! The difference was that they were made as LHDs and then converted to RHD. FoA did 2 crash tests and the costs of these were amortized into the cost of the expected 400 odd sold, AUS$85,000 at the time, equaled to US$60,000 for a Fox GT Mustang..... twintornados
I prefer the Giugiaro designed version due mostly to the side sculpting that includes the iconic "C" scoop....Auto Express' version looks like a Camaro redesign with a Mustang / Giugiaro grille....
