Tariffs are used to rectify an inequity of some sort and to protect or encourage domestic manufacturing. Trump sees them as a means to an end - to get concessions from other countries and to encourage more domestic manufacturing which is already happening.
I would prefer to see incentives for manufacturers to build here but I don’t think these tariffs will last long.
Hopefully the current economic climate makes Ford think more creatively……
These smaller new affordable BEVs are becoming reality in the next year or so
but there’s absolutely no guarantee that the uptake from buyers will be anything
like that expected a couple of years ago, even last year….
There’s got to be a way that Ford can adjust its plans so that C2 production can
cover all the “product holes” until enough buyer embrace BEVs so that anything
like a mass transition can occur….
Not saying that they should tear up everything, just take necessary steps to ensure
that vehicle supplies are not held to ransom by whatever trouble comes along…
It’s too logical a plan it seems for FOMOCO. It’s a real shame if you ask me. I’m kind of hoping that they have something up their sleeves and some of what’s been suggested in regards to this topic actually comes to fruition.
I believe Ford is gonna steal a lot of model 3/Y buyers away with CE1, and this might be a bold prediction, but I could actually see a future where long term, Rivian is a more established and enduring EV car maker than Tesla. They're progressing in a similar fashion to what Tesla was, starting out with more premium vehicles, gradually breaking into the mainstream affordable market, becoming profitable, etc. But they also have a much better design language, compete more heavily in segments that matter, don't seem to be that decisive, and have tons of funding from Amazon and VW.
I believe of all the EV players, Rivian has the best chance at long term success. It's looking not too bad for them even if their sales figures are down this year.
Tariffs would be a good thing IF global leaders were reasonable and intelligent people. If leaders across the board were like "Yeah, this isn't sustainable, and we see now our tariffs on American goods aren't necessarily fair. So we'll work with the states so each side reduces tariffs on the others goods by a proportional amount". It seems like some leaders are sensible, and doing that, and I'm all for it.
But humans are nothing if not stubborn, and nations like China hitting us with 34% tariffs, doubling down on the bullshit, has destroyed our economy, at least short term. I pray to all the Gods old and new that Trump and China will find a way to negotiate these tariffs down massively. This isn't sustainable long term.
I'm in this NVIDIA company for like $115 a share, thought it was a good buy because it was in the $140-150 range not long ago, and I've been getting slammed pretty hard. Hopefully stocks like that make a full recovery before the end of the year.
