Next-Gen Ford Fusion, Mondeo Successor Spotted

Recommended Posts

This new prototype wears front-end styling that’s very similar to the recently-revealed, China-only Ford EVOS crossover. However, as we move past the front, it’s clear that this is an entirely different vehicle

That looks to have some nice proportions..........and, hurrah, doesn't look like a CUV/SUV/Crossover!

But Ford have said the Mondeo isn't being replaced, so I assume this'll have a new name.

I think it'll also have the Outback-kinda-thing as an additional model...and I hope we get that here.

The Evos looks amazing and this looks pretty similar so Ford could have a hit on its hands. A few weeks ago Farley hinted that it would announce a new vehicle in the coming year or two that would be built in the United States...and this seems like the logical one...especially since Flat Rock needs product. This Fusion/Mondeo would fit perfectly there as well as a protentional Lincoln companion model.

One thing that would be great in this car is if Ford made the 2.5 Hybrid powertrain from the Escape available (or standard), as well as making AWD standard or the very least a very inexpensive option. That is one reason that Subaru has been so successful and I think Ford can jump on that bandwagon.

It looks like the 2022 and 2023  model year will be busy.
-Maverick
-Updated Expedition and Navigator
-Fusion
-Ranger
-EcoSport replacement
-Mustang
-Lincoln EV

-Entry level Ford EV

He said one built in the US?  I don't remember that part of it.

Remember technically Maverick hasn't been announced yet....though not built in the US if that was part of what Farley said.

Spotted in Germany, could this be a BEV on VW’s MEB toolkit?
An early prototype of production for Cologne?

There was an exchange on Twitter where someone asked Farley why Ford doesn't build more vehicles in the US and Farley responded with something like: "I assure you that you will be pleased with some upcoming announcements..." This must relate to upcoming and unannounced Fords or Lincolns being built in the US. We know that the Maverick and at least two EVs will be built in Ford's Mexican plants, and a few more EVs will be built in Canada. The only major program that we know about that hasn't been announced are the Fusion/Mondeo and the upcoming EcoSport replacement/s. The EcoSport replacement/s will almost assuredly be built in India, China, or perhaps in Ford's Romanian plant. That leaves the Fusion/Mondeo. We know that Flat Rock is by far Ford's most underutilized plant AND that it has a hard time building taller vehicles. This Fusion/Mondeo doesn't look that much taller than a regular sedan...so everything fits.

It doesn't look like the anticipated Fusion Active to me. Could it be an unheard of Fusion "Zephyr"?

It definitely has lower ride height compare to Evos and a more natural flowing fastback trunklet than the kammback look of Evos.

Proportion is all wrong for MEB. This is definitely C2. Also we already know what kind of car Ford is building at Cologne. It is going to be the successor to Puma, or something similar in size to upcoming VW ID.2 (B-segment CUV).

While you might be correct, remember VW ID Vission concept, there’s plenty of variation that is possible on MEB.

It just seems weird that Ford would commission a new C2 car after pushing utilities so hard,

I’m happy to be proven wrong about this btw....

True, but doesn’t stop stupid. People think Ford builds more in Mexico than it does, especially if trying to justify their Camry or Accord. The announcement about the BEVs for Ohio no longer being made there caused people to think all Ford BEVs are going to Mexico. I swear every Lightning thread on Twitter had people assuming it was being built in Mexico.

Would this not be a counterpart to the new Chinese Zephyr?

Hard to say with the camo on. Also remember, Evos and Zephyr are concept cars...

I remember that Chinese Taurus development paid for most of the engineering development of CD4+3 even though Continental had a slightly different wheelbase and completely different top hat Maybe this Ford sedan exists thanks to money spent developing Chinese Zephyr, maybe this Ford sedan developed at a fraction of what CD5 Fusion/Mondeo was going to cost?

This is for China only. No USA, no Europe. Is the Evos sedan (Mondeo?) or , maybe, the Taurus replacement.

Both the Mondeo and Fusion are supposed to be replaced by "something", which has been assumed to be something like a Subaru, since that was one of the areas Ford identified as a growth potential (along with going after Jeep with the Bronco subbrand).

The Evos would be a better fit for that, but who knows.

More pictures and info: Ford Mondeo/Fusion Successor Spied On The Road In Europe (motor1.com)

Edit: this car has no tailpipe. Maybe we haven't figured out the Fusion/Zephyr because they're EV only(?)

The article says that the rumors suggest that "Fusion/Mondeo" will be PHEV and that there's a muffler underneath even though no tailpipe is visible.

Looks like there is a muffler?

Same placement as the Muffler on Evos

A more recent design trend for whatever reason has been to completely tuck the exhaust back under the bumper so it's not visible at all......and then some companies have put chrome trim on the bumper that sort of looks like exhaust outlets.
