Technically not a hatch, probably to maintain body stiffness in the transverse plane. But the back seats fold down, so similar carrying/sleeping capacity.

Classic case of the grass I always greener.   Do you know how many 718s (boxster/cayman) Porsche sells each year?  Less than 5000.  For the whole year. Corvette?  Less than 35k.  Can’t get either of those less than $60k.   Mustang - 44K and starts at $35k.  It’s not an exotic.  It’s a pony car and a Ford icon.   I think what you want is a cheaper Ford GT.

Ford needs to toot their own horn- The Mustang is a bargain! Even with the Ecoboost you get a hot hatch that will turn 13 second quarters and corner at 1G with the right tires. Off the track you get 26 MPG and rear seats that fold down to give enough room to snooze or haul home a Costco cartload. And unlike the GTI and Toyota's self igniting Corolla Gazoo rally wannabe, Ford will still warranty the Mustang even if you autox or track day it.

You're right, I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just seeing the headlines, about how this is the mustang's worst sales year ever, and it's got me concerned. There's probably nothing that can realistically be done about it, it's just the direction the two door sports car market is going in. But I can't help but wonder if a slightly more exotic mustang, something with just a little bit of extra flair, would help to slow the bleeding, if only by a little bit. Ford played it pretty safe with the s650 apart from the GTD, and as was the case with the 6th Gen Camaro, it's looking like that might have been a mistake. 

It’s a pony car not a 2 seat sports car.   Go find a sports car with a back seat that has the power of the ecoboost or Mustang GT and it will cost a lot more.
