End of the road for Taurus and Fiesta

I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to by "modern amenities", but they were updated right up until the end in 2011 such that they have pretty much everything every other Ford/Lincoln from those same years had. Yes it's missing a means to connect your phone to the info/entertainment system but that's easily solved with a drop-in $200 pioneer head unit. No they don't have EPAS or stop/start, etc, but I would catagorize that stuff as "modern annoyances" rather than "modern amenities". As for safety, the later ones had the full array of side curtain airbags, back-up assist, roll stability control, etc.

 

Like I said, the main thing it's missing is phone connectivity, which is easily remedied with an aftermarket part.

Nah, I was just pointing out that they are currently a great deal (in terms of what you get for what you pay if you simply need room). Obviously any 2011 isn't going to have the latest 2018 tech.

 

That said, I think if you actually looked at one, you'd find it was equipped pretty much the exact same as any other 2011 Ford. That was my point.

Solution to both threads,

Convert old crown Vics to compact pick ups by removing the trunk lid.

I think this is close but maybe and ex PI with some 9mm air holes would be better

Geez, why does everyone think I'm comparing a a decade old crown vic to a new Fusion. All I ever said was that the crown vic had all the same stuff any other Ford from that era did. It's crash ratings were as good or better as any other Ford sedan right up to the end of production.

 

Yeah of course a decade old car is not the same as a new car. That goes without saying. My only point in bringing it up is that it's one of the best options going for a family in need of room on a budget.

But a crown vic solves it more lol. To each their own though - styling is subjective. The big thing with the panthers is they're just an absolutely dirt cheap bargain for what you get nowadays.

I have a sneaking suspicion that in the next design cycle when Fusion moves to a new chassis - it will likely get renamed Taurus and Fusion nameplate will move to a CUV based vehicle.

Taurus brand is a little toxic and has been for a long time, so I would probably put that one into a home alongside Thunderbird, Probe and Escort. Fusion is a very strong name with excellent brand recognition, it would be confusing to move it to anything else unless they were trying to move those customers to a crossover and wanted to exit the sedan business (which is certainly very possible).

 

Besides, Taurus is still used on a large sedan in China, although sales are even more dismal there.

I'm not sure that I like either of those scenarios. The Taurus lost its cache years ago when Ford let it die off with no redesigns for years, fleet sales only to help keep the Atlanta plant open, etc. Then it was resurrected as the full size successor to the Ford Five Hundred that's never been very successful at the retail level. In the meantime, Ford's established the Fusion name in the mid-size sedan market.

 

It used to be, I know, years ago that models had a complete redesign every three years. Each model had its own unique look and identity but even when it was redesigned, you knew instantly that it was the new model because of the design elements that were carried over. I come from a family of long time Ford buyers but drove Mercury Cougar's for a number of years. My best friend in college had a brand new 1970 Cougar XR-7 Convertible that I drove often. Then we both bought factory ordered 1974 Cougar XR-7's, without knowing the other had bought ordered one, when it was redesigned and introduced as sort of a smaller version of the 1974 Lincoln Mark IV that was introduced that same year. The neighbors certainly wondered what I was thinking when I drove the new car home in the middle of the gas crisis! The Cougar resurrected the Mercury brand to the point that all Mercury TV advertising ended with "The sign of the cat" slogan with a live cougar sitting on top on the Mercury signage. Along the years the Cougar developed a very loyal following and owner body, that is, until Mercury decided to capitalize on the Cougar name and introduce a 4-door Cougar and a station wagon model. The Cougar name lost its identity as such and a lot of us felt abandoned and as a result I went back to driving a Ford. Too bad because I traded in my 1974 Cougar XR-7 for a 1976 before the redesign and drive the car cross country for 9 months. To date, my 1976 Cougar XR-7 is my all time favorite car!

 

All too often, Ford spends millions of dollars over a period of years in advertising to establish a model's recognition. And all too often, after a number of years, they drop the name for a new model name and start the process all over again. Would potential buyers look at a Fusion or Taurus CUV because of the name? I'm not sure. I think I'd rather see Ford bring back a classic model name from the past like the Fairlane or something else.

Possibly the highest gas prices seen in years and ford whacks the fiesta and kicks focus to the curb...bring back bell bottoms and mini skirts..its ford of 1973 all over again..

Torino comes to mind, Maverick is another....but for every fond memory of "Torino" or "Maverick"...there are also names like Pinto, Fairmont and Granada that make you shudder...

Why would Ford move the Fusion to a crossover when they already have Edge?. Ford not showing their cards in the car front but it would be not good for them to drop Fusion along with Taurus. They probably (and rightfully) scrambling to find NA production for Focus, was probably looking to source Fusion production in China if it wasn't for the implied tariffs.

 

And for sakes WTH can't truck production mix in with car production at the same plants?. You think if they can make a Crown Vic and an Escort at the same plant they can do BOF/unibody at anywhere, in Ford's case the Escape Focus and Transit C. are the same vehicle underneath but made in totally separate plants is mind boggling, GM is guilty of this also (like Sonic made in Michigan and the hotter selling Track/Encore made in Korea despite the same platform/running gear).
