  3. If Ford made a mistake exiting the heavy truck business, it was their timing. In retrospect, they should have sold out before starting the HN80 program. From what I understand, HN80 was late and over budget, and I suspect Freightliner would not have paid that much less for the operation without the New Louisville trucks. Freightliner wanted the dealer network more than anything else, and though the HN80 had some potential it never materialized into a really great truck. Certainly nothing like the 1970 Louisville was. It was ironic that 'Sterling' never went anywhere, and a big reason for that was Freightliner's own growth in vocational class 7/8. Yeah, I though the Brazilian Cargo would have been a good addition to Ford's N.A. truck range, but it never happened. The larger Otosan trucks would never fly here. I have a feeling that Otosan will eventually team up with Traton............

  4. Doesn't CA have problems with not enough electricity now. Wonder what's going to happen when all the rigs are plugged into the power grid. Maybe a coal fire plant could help out with that.?

  5. It's probably just me then, I'm the Luddite I guess. I don't even like using lane keep assist, I find it to be way too intrusive, especially when entering and exiting the freeway.

  6. The rolling blackouts are done to reduce the chance of forest fires caused by downed power lines in windy (Santa Ana) conditions in certain high-risk areas. They are not the result of a lack of capacity at present. The utility companies will be able to meet the challenge as the phase-in of BEV's will be gradual. I ought to know, near 40 years in the energy business. In California.

  12. Ford is largely seen as a local brand in most of western Europe, especially in UK and Germany, its two strongest markets. Although Ford has squandered that goodwill and now trails both Toyota and Hyundai in passenger cars in Europe. It still leads light commercial vehicles as the single biggest brand but Stellantis and Renault are bigger players due to all the rebadges. This is why getting VW into the Ford commercial camp is a good thing for Ford... it ensures Ford can continue to operate at scale vs. the two French companies. Stellantis rebadge vans: Peugeot, Citroen, Opel/Vauxhall, Fiat, Toyota Renault rebadge vans: Renault, Mercedes, Opel/Vauxhall (being phased out), Nissan, Mitsubishi, Dacia, Lada Ford rebadge vans: none but will add VW soon

  15. I knew Jac Nasser was CEO when the decision was made and executed, I've just always wondered why. Why walk away from the business the company spent decades cultivating and had become a major player in? I understand many of the decisions Nasser made were unpopular at the time and didn't age well either.

  19. The Mach-e is a beautiful vehicle and is an example of what a good BEV could be. But, there are a lot of issues that BEVs must overcome before they will be accepted by the mass market. These issues will take time, so a 20-30 year time frame isn't unrealistic. 1) Range anxiety. Consumers are not going to be comfortable driving a vehicle with less than 300 mile range. 2) Lack of charging stations. This couples with range anxiety. The infrastructure for BEVs has a long way to go. In addition, not everyone has a garage where they can charge their vehicle overnight, i.e., what do people do who live in apartments? 3) Length of time to charge batteries. Again, this goes with range anxiety and lack of infrastructure. Consumers aren't going to wait 45 minutes to an hour or more at a charging station. 4) Cost. A Mach-e is a very nice vehicle. But for $56,000 for an extended range and AWD, is out of reach for most consumers. 5) Technology. Battery technology is in middle of changing. With the introduction of solid state batteries in the next 5 years or so, could obsolete current BEVs. Incentives and government policy aren't enough to move consumers into BEVs. BEVs have to be as convenient as ICE powered vehicles. They also need style, features, performance, etc. that consumers want to pay for.

  20. Ford did have their own "bullet proof" diesels - the 401/6.6 and 474/7.8 engines were used in those trucks alongside Cat/Cummins/DD diesel power and FE/385 gassers. Those Ford diesels started in 1965 ag tractors and continued in various forms through about 2008 in New Holland stuff before emissions finally mandated a switch to the current Fiat-supplied motors. Anyways, the 6.6 and 7.8 in trucks seem to be regarded as slow (but what wasn't back in the days of 200 hp Class 7 trucks?) but very reliable. I never understood why Ford just walked away from that business and that engine line specifically. Why was it the IH V8 diesel that went in pickups starting in the 80s instead of Ford's successful in-house 6.6L?

  21. I didn't say that, but one could presume that. With that said the overwhelming majority would not do that. Do not confuse Central NY with anything to do with NYC....most people automatically believe that when you say "I am from NY" they assume you mean New York City...

  23. Correct, the Powerstroke/Torq-Shift combo was capable but could not surpass the Cummins/Allison combo in sheer popularity. I still believe (and I have no proof to back it up) that the Next Gen USPS vehicle will rest on a Ford supplied chassis/powertrain assembly (Transit stripped van).

I think what Joe is referring to is "nationalist loyalty" since VW is a Euro-centric company and Ford could be seen as the American invader...but that really doesn't play outside of Germany and that Ford has been a presence in Europe for over 100 years...Ford of Great Britain began in 1909 and Ford Germany in 1925 and merging into the Ford of Europe that we know today in 1967.

  25. Why would you assume that? Ford leads the market in Europe for a reason... The loyalty will work in Ford's favor instead of VW if you are talking about light commercial vehicles.

  26. True now, but as improvements are made to the grid in high risk areas it will become less of a factor. Funny this is being mentioned, a good friend of mine is working on these projects as we speak. In any event if there is a blackout, you are not pumping any gas or diesel either.

  29. I think it was PT Barnum that said "the bigger the lie the more people will believe it." Will electric vehicles have a role? Of course. But it takes money- and lots of it- to replace an established and reliable energy network like oil. If Californians love the rolling blackouts and high energy prices now, wait until your charging 20 million vehicles a day.

  30. Yes. Like California. Won't happen tomorrow, but if a BEV like the new Hummer can have a 350+ mile range and can be recharged in 20 minutes, it will work. And 1,000 H.P. will just be icing on the cake.

  32. So, if I am correct this will require us to voluntarily report miles driven, maybe on our 1040 form. Verification how? Transponder in our cars ala EZPASS? Then not so voluntary. So how many of these would be tucked away or "lost"? A new "revenue" agent to find non conforming vehicles? We aren't even giving a contact tracer to folks coming over the border "undocumented". Trying to be politically correct. BOHICA. Or as my grandpap explained the military acronym SNAFU, situation normal, all fouled up. Found out later, after grandma left the room.

  33. My understanding is that Pierce has dropped the Powerstroke/Torq-Shift powertrain. I don't think there was anything wrong with it, but very few if any were sold. As for the Oshkosh Postal Vehicle, that remains shrouded in mystery! Initially, Oshkosh's proposal was a heavily modified Ford Transit, but early on in the program that plan was dropped. Never heard exactly why, but I suspect the proposed vehicle just couldn't meet the USPS spec.. Oshkosh parted company with Ford and went on alone with a their own dedicated design. There is some speculation that Ford may be the ICE powertrain supplier for the Oshkosh Postal Vehicle, but I have not heard anything concrete on that yet.

American`s that drive for a living will be so happy to have this Indiana one term mayor`s view of the make believe world that the Jobama crew see`s. Auto Workers that don`t work in an old rehabbed train station, Independent Owner/Operators, Traveling Nurses and of course Cartage Companies in general will love paying another tax. I remember this appointee`s response to the question "what is your background and experience in transportation management?" ....and I quote "umm I was a mayor of a midwestern city so I know about pot - holes" this sheepie`s is what will be reaching into your check each week if he has his way. Note; I did political correct my statement, I was going to put it like this "sheepie`s, this guy will be reaching into your back pocket every week" but I don`t want to give the impression of any hoboafoebic references. I wonder has any sheepie (stay at home and eat your oats voters) ever heard the label given to crystal ball progressives or read a text stating "liberalism = tax and spend" or in this case "spend and tax"...   37. You are correct - I meant auto stop/start is turned back on. I have to manually turn it off each time the vehicle starts. As to why I use auto hold all the time, I’m in a bit of a unique situation as I am disabled and use hand controls. Thus, auto hold allows me to rest my left hand while stopped.

  41. Again, I sincerely appreciate all the advice and information presented here. Today, I got in touch with the sales manager at the Lincoln dealership via e-mail, and he confirmed: 1. They will happily accept Ford X-Plan, and I can use my PIN to special-order and purchase a 2022 Aviator. 2. They are unable to CPO Ford-brand vehicles; however, the family that owns the Lincoln dealership also owns a Ford dealership in another town. My Explorer will likely end up there if I decide to trade it. The sales manager even attached a copy of the 2022 Aviator Order Guide which I thought was very nice of him. Of course, thanks to ice-capades, I've been studying the Order Guide since last Monday. More news as it happens...

  47. Does anyone know if there will be a Grand Touring plug-in hybrid of the Nautilus? Initial indications are that Lincoln hasn't had enough interest from customers for a Grand Touring Nautilus. I am personally interested in a plug-in hybrid but find the Corsair too small and the Aviator too large. The Nautilus is the Goldilocks size for me. I agree
