bzcat
@BZcat....personally I wish they would also manufacture the Explorer WITHOUT the third seat Do you get a lot of customers asking for a big 5 seat SUV? Just curious
silvrsvt
my only fear is Ford is making the same mistake twice....I remember a time when all their eggs were in one basket and it hit them HARD....that said all their eggs were gas guzzling monsters and that issue has basically been addressed....but I think it would be FOOLISH to ignore sedans and Hatchbacks in leiu of what could be "Flavor of the year"...that said CUV sales don't seem to b ebacking off at all... Well you have to look at this way...it seems like CUV's are taking off in Europe...I'm guessing they are replacing Wagons there. The other thing is this...Ford doesn't have two separate mid-size sedan platforms (or other segments before EU and NA got homogenized) and all the Sedan platforms they have now are used as CUVs, so investment money won't be spent in a either or fashion like it was in the past. A CD4 CUV helps pay for improvements on a CD4 sedan and vise versa. Getting back to the topic at hand...so what to call the Ecosport in the US? Escort?? That would fit the semi-official E nomenclature that Ford has been using with SUV/CUVs
StangBang
I am absolutely not interested in seeing a Bronco come back in any way, shape or form unless it is a Jeep Wrangler competitor in the spirit of the original Bronco. Also, I promise to kill myself the day the Mustang becomes an SUV just because that's all that Ford thinks they can sell... You know the right SUV for the right time bullshit! akirby
I gave plenty of examples before. It's fine if you refuse to acknowledge that segment exists but as long as every car company out there think it exist Ford probably should too. Jeep Compass & Patriot, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Subaru XV, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Renault Kadjar, Nissan Qashqai, VW Tiguan, Skoda Yeti, Seat Ateca, Peugeot 4008, Suzuki S-Cross, Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA, BMW X1, Infiniti QX30... Do I need to keep going? I haven't even mentioned any of the Chinese car companies or models intended for the emerging markets from established car companies. Ford sells a Focus hatch and a Focus wagon. Why? Because some people like one that is short while others like one that is long. Right now, Ford only sells a long CUV. They are leaving a lot of sales on the table for a short C-segment CUV. Audi sells 3 size crossovers. so does Hyundai and BMW. With a b sized entry Ford will have 4 including Explorer. I do t see how making it 5 is necessary. Nobody else has 4 much less 5. It's not about the exact size it's more about the range of choices. akirby
Where has Ford given any indication that they're going to let cars stagnate? We know they're working on new C and CD platforms and probably a new b platform as well. It would be foolish not to expand Utilities now. blazerdude20
Ok, can you provide some examples from other mfrs that have this Short C vehicle you keep mentioning? I can't see how it would make sense if it's only 8 inches different from a B or C large. Mazda CX-5 is the closest. never mind it's almost the same length as the escape. blazerdude20
I truly don't see sedan sales consistently edging up for a long time if ever. Modern crossovers get similar mileage and offer far more space.
akirby
Mazda CX-5 is the closest. never mind it's almost the same length as the escape. Just to be clear I wasn't talking about that specific size vehicle. I was asking who else had 3 that were that close together.
AGR
I wont buy a Ute, since I like being able to turn a corner and not feel like going to tip over, and not have to slow down and hold up traffic. But not going to post endlessly that "buyers should buy station wagons instead, if only Ford offered them, buyers would come in..." Not gonna happen. As long as 5 door hatches are available, and I will switch brands if I have to. I don't think that you will have to worry about that, soon every significant mainstream brand will offer compact hatchbacks. The last holdout is Nissan, they're now rumored to have one soon(based on the Euro market Pulsar). My take on the 4 new SUV/CUV models: a true B-segment CUV, with a different nameplate for the USA; new Bronco; new "Aviator"; and an EV CUV. Platforms, drivetrains, running gear, etc are shared a lot more between cars and Utility Vehicles than they were in the 90s Ford lineup. It would be harder and more costly to build class-leading utes alongside below-average cars than to share the best-in-class bits among both.
atomcat68
I wonder if one of the segments may be an "suv coupe" like the BMW blimp mobile thing or that new Mercedes zeppelin looking thing. I hope not because the Crosstour was a dud.
MKII
Jim Farley is saying the same # of new SUV/CUV's (4) for EU market as the Ford NA report Launch five new vehicles to compete in the SUV and crossover space in the next three years, starting with new Edge in the second quarter. https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/feu/en/news/2016/02/03/ford-accelerates-transformation-plan-in-europe-to-build-vibrant-.pdf Edited February 12, 2016 by MKII

AGR, not picking at you, but since the Aviator has been mentioned a few times in the thread: I think we have to take it off the table, given that Ford said in its announcement: Ford will add four new nameplates to its global SUV lineup Unless the thought is that Aviator will go global, it's not in this discussion. AGR
An Aviator would be global, it would be sold in North America, China, and the Middle East, at a minimum, and perhaps elsewhere.

It should be global, but you'd have to call it something other than a 3 row luxury crossover in order for it to be a new segment.

Good point, I wonder if it's not sold in Europe, would Ford consider it global? The Continental will be sold in China (perhaps ME), but is it considered a global product? akirby
If it's sold in more than one region it's global. Doesn't have to be in every region.
fordmantpw
Does 'global lineup' mean that it is sold globally? I think 'global lineup' means the entire Ford lineup. F150 is part of the global lineup even if it is only sold in NA. Saying 'global lineup' doesn't mean the vehicle is sold globally, it just means they don't have to say which market it will be sold in. That's my take on it. Likely, almost any new Ford is going to be sold globabally, though.

I hope not because the Crosstour was a dud. I would love to have a Mustang based BMW X6 type vehicle from Ford. I'll take one with a 5.0 V8 (or maybe a 3.0TTV6), AWD, 9 or 10 speed auto, seating for 5 and towing capacity up to 5000 pounds. They can call it the Ford Maverick GT. akirby
Juke is a different animal and sells based on style, not size. But I'll give you the other two. I still don't think it's necessary for Ford but I also admit I could be completely wrong.
