Assimilator
Here you go! The final design of the Explorer, although this is the Police version. https://jalopnik.com/this-is-the-2020-ford-explorer-before-youre-supposed-to-1828528782?rev=1534963362392&utm_campaign=socialflow_jalopnik_twitter&utm_source=jalopnik_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow Edited August 22, 2018 by Assimilator
twintornados
More "evolutionary" in style than "revolutionary"....instantly recognizable as Explorer but thoroughly modern at the same time.
tbone
I think that is looking really sharp. You can still recognize it as an Explorer, which is nice. Should be a hit.
jcartwright99
Nice shots of the front end. https://jalopnik.com/this-is-the-2020-ford-explorer-before-youre-supposed-to-1828528782

rmc523
I'm not a fan of the grille sliding under the headlights like it does. Looks like they set it up for an optional contrasting roof with that cut line over the C pillar. I worry it looks too similar to the outgoing model - does it look too much like a refresh? I'll reserve final judgment until seeing it fully revealed, though.
Deanh
dig it...better proportions, smaller overhangs and nicely tapered roof line!...grill may be upgraded on consumer models and even differ on this once it reaches production.
The Handler
The wider molding is interesting. I wonder if there's an Eddie Bauer-like trim in the works. Timberline?
Anthony
I like the side sculpting, but jeez, I sure hope that grille is police-only spec because it is horrible.

mackinaw
Sharp. I like the bolts on the rear dif.
coupe3w
Is that really the final version of the police grill? Hope that doesn't carry over to the production for the rest of the Explorer line.
ice-capades
I'd expect the front end, especially the grille, to be similar to what we're seeing here. It's focused less for design aesthetics and more for push bar, police lights, etc. upfits.

Not like it doesn't have (ugly) precedence already
jpd80
I'm sure the aim is that buyers will not mistake a PI for a regular Explorer
T-dubz
seems silly to completely redesign a vehicle, but then make it look the same as a vehicle that came out in 2011. Besides the grill, I dont think the average person will notice the difference. Hell, I have a hard time seeing any difference besides the grill and the sloping roof line without seeing a picture of them side by side. That grill just doesnt look finished. id hope that is a police only version. At least it doesnt have a floating roof. Wish there were some pics of the interior
bzcat
I like the side sculpting, but jeez, I sure hope that grille is police-only spec because it is horrible. The grille is definitely PIU design specific. I like the subtle up sweep angle of the belt line which creates the tapering effect of the window as it gets narrower towards the back. It gives the vehicle an athletic look using a visual trick. It almost looks like the roof line is dropping in the back but if you look at it with something in the background for context, the roof is flat but the cut line wraps around the top of the window. tbone
I recognize it is somewhat evolutionary, but to me it looks like a new vehicle and I dont feel it will be mistaken for the old one. You can run into problems if you stray too far from the DNA. I was watching some YouTube videos on the 2019 Silverado and it was pretty clear to me there was some uncertainty over the new style of the vehicle. It was my opinion they werent digging it and there was a lot of talk about it needing to grow on you. Personally I dont mind it, but some grill configurations on the new Chevy are ugly.
T-dubz
Maybe the changes will become more obvious when its not camoed or in police trim. I think the aviator looks amazing so my hopes were high for the explorer to look equally as good. Its still a nice looking vehicle regardless.
T-dubz
The new Edge is the same way. I can see not wanting to mess with the explorer too much since it sells well, but each generation of edge has been evolutionary. This was an opportunity to shake things up and try to move up the midsize cuv ladder.
Trader 10
To me, the 2015 Edge changes are a lot more than evolutionary compared to the 14.
ExplorerDude
I think itll be great, but those headlights will need to grow on me some. Overall better proportions, with less front and rear overhang. Better dash to axle ratio shows more space between front wheel and front door. While similar and not a major departure styling wise, its changed enough where people will be able to tell its a new Explorer.
